Mountain Lion has random freezes. The mouse still works but the graphics go glitchy and i can't click on anything. I have to hold the power to restart.

Since installing mountain lion about a week ago on my late 2008 unibody 15" macbook pro, i'm experiencing random lockups where the graphics go glitchy and i can only move the mouse, but clicking does not work.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Add me to those experiencing freeze issues. I have a rMBP, and this seems to happen after anytime I run a JAVA applet. My computer freezes for about 5 seconds, then runs fine again. If I disable graphics card switching, then the problem no longer occurs. Here is the error log from the console:

With my 10.8.2 macbook air- No freezes here but Chrome, and SkySafari (an astronomy simulator) frequently crash, as did the Kindle mac app once.

iTunesHelper and Spotify were login items. Is any of this a worry??

Have done a fresh install and have barely re-installed any applications. My computer is a bit battered but presumably this is a memory issue rather than a flash drive physical problem (I think?)

Similar problems here:

Crashing with, in no particular order and not always with:

Adobe After Effects cs5

ConceptDraw Pro 8

Adobe Illustrator cs5

Mozilla Firefox

And the dreaded FINDER!

After reading some posts i uninstalled Sophos and an old nokia 3g modem

that failed to load, but the crashes continues.

Here I post my log, to see if Etresoft can take a look at 🙂

Sometimes nothing seems to fail the loading and sometimes i receive fails in the login.

Brand new MacBook Pro 15" with Retina. Everything freezes except the pointer. I close the lid and the display stays on.

This usually occurs when I plug my Thunderbolt cable in, which is connected to the Matrox DS-1 dock, which in turn has Ethernet, a USB mouse, and HDMI display connected to it.

What's weird is that the restart after a hard shutdown is a lot quicker than a regular cold boot/restart. The login screen shows up after about 5-7 seconds on this post-freeze restart; all other bootups/restarts take about 20-30.

I can't glean any useful info from the Console outputs.

Same issue here on Lion on Macbook Pro, upgraded to Mountain Lion and still happening.

The gfxcardstatus app forcing the laptop in to only using the integrated graphics card definitely "fixes" the issue but defeats the purpose of having a better card.

Very repeatable issue, just use any graphics intensive app (eg Aperture)

Serious hardware faults with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M GPU which Apple should (a) admit and (b) fix as quickly as possible given how widespread it appears to be.

Jun 19, 2013 8:55 AM in response to V4Del

I agree with V4Del. Anything that taxes the GPU causes the screen to tear up and the system to freeze or kernel panic. Try bitcoin mining with guiminer.app set to max out your GPU and you'll quickly activate this problem. I have been having this intermittently through several Macs. I wish I could have nailed it down to the bad GPUs when they were still under warranty! Way to screw us Apple. :-(

Mountain Lion has random freezes. The mouse still works but the graphics go glitchy and i can't click on anything. I have to hold the power to restart.
