Mountain Lion has random freezes. The mouse still works but the graphics go glitchy and i can't click on anything. I have to hold the power to restart.

Since installing mountain lion about a week ago on my late 2008 unibody 15" macbook pro, i'm experiencing random lockups where the graphics go glitchy and i can only move the mouse, but clicking does not work.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

This problem had disappeared after I updated all my Safari plug-ins, but unfortunately it returned after a few days. It disappeared again after I uninstalled AirParrot, but again it returned after a few days. It is definitely graphics-related. Today I had to perform a hard-reset more than 20 times as I was editing photos in Aperture and Photoshop. VERY frustrating. The problem is also easily triggered by watching Flash videos (e.g. YouTube).

Apple, if you're reading this: you've clearly broken something with Mountain Lion, and not just for me but for countless others too! Quit ignoring us! Find out what's wrong and fix it in your next update, please! If I had known that Mountain Lion were so unstable, I would have NEVER upgraded. Very, very disappointing.

My iMac 21.5" just started doing these random hangs. It only happens once or twice a week for us. I have kept OSX up to the latest and greatest versions without fail since I purchased this computer in the 2009 timeframe; I am now running 10.8.2. I have no idea if it is 10.8.2 related, or just untimely h/w malfunctions.

Within the past month, both times the system hangs have occurred while in Safari at non-descript sites (Amazon.com today); since my wife and I share this machine, we sometimes use Chrome and other times Safari. The hangs are as described here; mouse continues to update, but it is not possible to click on anything or get any reaction from the iMac. Only a hard reset with the power button gets the system to come back to life.

This feels like a hardware problem, but I admit it could certainly be a driver problem introduced in 10.8.2. Wierdly, I just received an email from Apple (my iMac is still under warranty) in the past week that suggested I update my 1TB hard drive since there are known problems with my h/w; just take it to the AppleStore and get the fix after I do a Time Machine backup. I suppose (?) it could be hard drive related, but who knows... anyway, if after I udpate the hard drive the problem goes away, I'll repost that information here then.

I have the same problem, on an iMac 27" (late 2009). It started after I updated to Lion in the summer of 2011, and has been getting progressively worse. At first, it would happen only once or twice a month. Now it happens multiple times each day. I upgraded to Mountain Lion, but the problem persists.

Apple please help! My Mac is almost unusable, because it may freeze at any moment.

all i can say for you guys, that is problem in software you using on your mac's, try to trace it when it freeze. for example in my case when it has been freez Chrome was always open, so i just reinstalled it and now no problem on my mac.

anyway best solution it's make a clean install and try to use it on clean for week maybe two, and then try to install all your software to find out what programm is make it freeze

sorry for my english, i hope you understand me :)) haha

I have researched this a bit further, and believe the problem may in fact be with the AMD graphics driver used in Mountain Lion. If this is true, the freeze has nothing to do with whether iTunes is running (or not), Chrome, or presumablly any other application for that matter. My 21.5" iMac has the AMD graphics (not NVIDIA). Are others on this thread with the freeze problem also running with the AMD graphics on their iMac? If so, I suspect the rumor (?) about the AMD driver problem may be the root cause...

Duh, should have looked at this thread more closely myself. At least one person above reported the problem happens with their iMac with the NVIDIA graphics. Maybe the problem is simply in the graphics driver for old chipsets? Anyway, I don't really know... I recently re-installed 10.8.2 on an unrelated issue (my 1TB hard drive was recently replaced under warranty by Apple due to a h/w issue there). Since the 10.8.2 re-install with Time Machine (once I got the machine back from apple), all has been ok for the past week or two (no freezes). This may not hold true forever, but thought worth mentioning.

Well I can say that apparently I managed to remove the Soundlfower kernel extension. Don't know how but its gone. Since then, I haven't had a freeze anymore (one month of no freezes which used to occur on a daily basis). Yesterday out of the blue it happened again though, but I found this was connected with my TC backup. It had all the freezing characteristics like finder and other applications not responding. However after cancelling the TC backup and giving it a moment to recover, the machine came to life again. So for everyone out here, see if there is a connection between the freeze and your TC making a backup. Might also be multiple causes since removing soundflower dramatically improved my systems performance regarding this issue. Good luck!!

Mountain Lion has random freezes. The mouse still works but the graphics go glitchy and i can't click on anything. I have to hold the power to restart.
