New to Mac, Basic questions

Coming from PC Windows world...so please be patient with me😊I have had this MBP Retina scan for 36 hours and spent 6 of those hours with One-to-One where it took them more than an hour to even get me logged into the Apple Store (complicated story, not worth going into).

What Anti Virus program do you recommend?

Face Time appears to soley be for one Apple product to another; therefore, does Skype work with this Mac? I have Snow Lion OS.

Email question: I found how I can add an ADDRESS when someone writes me, but how do you manually update the Address Book?

I want to be able to use Safari to TEXT to smart phones. Is there a SMS App that you recommend for Snow Lion? Any help in this area is greatly appreciated as I am new to the smart phone world as well. I have a situation this summer where I will be on a ship that has WiFi but no Cell service, so I can surf but still have a need for text.

I have many more questions, but this will get me started. Thanks in advance.

I don't recommend any AV software. Since there is nothing for the AV software to do, why spend all of those those resourses to do nothing. Then some AV software such as Norton can actually cause problems on Mac. Why be bothered.

Yes, Skype works with Mac.

I am on IMAP, but in this MAC Email it leaves my mail on the server and I have to go to my PC and open Eudora to remove it. Frustrating.

Right the built in Mac Mail, IMHO, Stinks.

Give Thunderbird a try. I Use it on all my computers, Mac & PCs.

You need a add-on for thunderbird to sync with Gmail contacts.

Google Contact 0.6.40.

And in the Mac Address book just sign in to your Gmail account and it will sync al your contact.

Addrees book preferences Accounts or Sys Prefs Mail, Contact & Calendars.

Does This Make Sense...the One-to-One support were stumped at the Apple Store: When I open my Email on this MBP, read the Email, and leave it, as soon as I open my Eudora Email on my PC it will delete the Email on the Mac and open it on the PC...how can that happen? I have never seen a computer remove something from another that are not connected, except via WiFi use.

It makes NO sense. It is one of the flaws in the Mac Mail program. the same with Mac mail no deleting emails from the server when it is deleted in the program. Some will say that is a Gmail thing but with thunderbird I have that open on both PC and Mac, sitting right next to one another, and when a new Gmail email arrives in my Inbox it shows up on both system. If I read it on one it will marked it as read on the other. If I then delete it, move to trash, it will movee it to trash on the other. If I then Empty the trash it removes it from the server and all devices, PC, Mac and phone.

From this description you've got the account in Eudora on the PC configured as a POP account (which is set up to remove the mail from the server), and the account in Mail on the MBP as an IMAP account (which won't remove the mail from the server). It sounds like you need to pick one account type and stick with it.

Yes, I was wondering if this was the reason, but wasn't sure enough to mention it. Looks like there might be some credence to it.

I am using IMAP email on Mac, iPhone, iPad, and webmail and it works consistently on all.

Before starting to rely on Thunderbird, be aware that Mozilla is stopping development.

Mozilla Puts the Brakes on Thunderbird

Mozilla is not stoppinig development of Thunderbird. It will still get stability updates and along with that become a better Email client, if that is possible.

Like Apple spends a lot of time on Mac Mail.

Also I have no idea what is wrong with Mac Mail that it does not remove emails from the server in an IMAP mail account setup but I have 2 Gamil accounts and my work email is also IMAP and TB moves and removes mail from the server when I put email in the trash, moves from inbox and all mail to trash, and then empty the trash when I do on my computers.

Whatever.
