It loads the App Store window and tries to load itself, but after 5-10 seconds it stops and has a nice, pretty message on the app store window "cannot connect to app store"

I have literally tried everything in this thread. The only thing I have not done yet is delete the Norten Anti Virus. Do you think this will make a difference?

I managed to download the 10.8.1 update on my wife's mac and installed it via USB. That worked for about 5mins and then went back to not being able to verify a secure connection to the app store and the Internet not working.

I am sure it's something to do with the wifi as I tested using my phones Internet with 3G as the router and that was fine.

Any more suggestions would be very welcome.

I too am having this issue. I also cannot use mail or safari

I get this error message

Check with the developer to make sure App Store works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X.

I obviously cannot connect to the app store to get another copy of OSX to reinstall....

please help

I also had the error "App Store cannot verify a secure connection with the App Store".

For me it was my DNS settings, so nothing would resolve.

I had just installed Server.app which turned on DNS Server which I immediately shut off. But then I had to go to System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> DNS and remove the hard coded entry for 127.0.0.1.

Hey all - Somewhere else on these forums I got a hit about the Apple Phone Service saying that the App Store uses the same engines as Safari.

I restarted Safari since I don't know when last and prepared also to reset the App Store, as instructed by the guy who writes articles here.

I accidentally started the App Store when I was supposed to shut it down for the resetting, but it worked!

Well go figure, the Apple Phone Guy were right.

Good luck,
