Photo Booth audio and video out of sync

Hi everyone.

I tried recording a video three times today on Photobooth, and every time, the audio and video are out of sync. Does anyone have any solutions as to how I can fix this? Its ever since I downloaded Mountain Lion.

Thankyou.

Ist rep had me reinstall Mountain Lion/ didn't work

2nd Rep wants me to delete my entire operating system and start from scratch. Stated that there might be a handware issue. A) My iMac was taken in for repair not that long ago, so if there were any issues this would've been noticed and taken care of then B) It's obviously not a hardware issue if the issues is only effecting one application. If there was a hardware issue wouldn't it have been noticable within other areas ie Quick Time and effected more than just this one application? I think so. I'm just going to take it into a store.

I have no intention on doing what that rep advised. I just wanted the orginal poster and anyone else who is having this issue, to be aware of what transpired when I contacted Apple Care. I used to work at the store I will visiting. I will ask one of my "Genius" friends on the staff if there have been any other customers who've had this issue and what's the solution. Also, I still fine it strange that there isn't anyone from Apple who goes thru these postings to see what issues customers are having. When you call it's always as if they've never heard about certain issues, even though many people are having the same issue and have contacted them. When I worked for Apple (retail), some of us, would let customers know if we where aware of certain issues, especially if we were experiencing it ourselves. I've never cared cared for lip-service and never gave it to any customer. Lip-service is considered good customer service at times and when it comes to tech, that won't do. We just want our devices and software to work. "It just works." No, it doens't sometimes. If they don't know what is going on then say so. Then find out and get back to me with a solution. 😎

As much as I love my Apple products, Apple and especially employees of the Apple Stores deny any issue unless there is a fix. Remember the yellow screen issue on the Late 2009 iMacs? Store employees wouldn't address it because they said they don't discuss "rumors." LOL. We do put up with a lot and pay a premium price for this privilege. That said, I love my MBP, iMac, iPhone, Apple TV etc etc. I just got a Panasonic Lumix camera and spent $50 on Clip Wrap, available at the App Store for $49.99, to allow the camera's 1080/60p, 60i to function in iMovie. There are other things wonderful abut the products and the general ease of use. There is a flaw in Photo Booth now but it did work correctly at one time.

Hi,

The Apple MIDI is located in Applications > Utilities > Apple Audio MIDI setup.

Close Photobooth.

All of these are set as follows, this worked for me:

Built-In Microphone (2 in/ 0 out):

Format 44100.0 Hz 2ch-24-bit Integer (volumes up, value 1 (db 12) no mute

Built-In Input (2 in/ 0 out):

same Format 44100.0 Hz 2ch-24-bit Integer Hardware Rate Converter: Disabled (volumes up, value 0.833 (db 8) no mute

Built-in Output (0 in / 2 out): same Format 44100.0 Hz 2ch-24-bit Integer (volumes up, value 0.756 (db -7.5) no mute.

Reboot laptop.

This worked for me, I am on Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on late 11' Macbook Pro 15"

Hope this helps ! It was indeed frustrating. I had to change the entire series of Photo Booth videos with iMovie by detaching the audio and moving each audio piece to match up with my lips ! LOL. It took a while but that corrected the videos. Good Luck !

Lets do a check-list, including all of the combined suggestions above and what I did to correct my Photo Booth in Macbook Pro 15 Dec 2011 model with 10.8.2 (I can test with other models if needed). 🙂

In Photo Booth

  1. Open Photo Booth,
  2. Secondary click (or, if enabled, 2 finger pad-select) on any video / image thumbnail,
  3. Select "show in finder",
  4. Close Photo Booth
  5. In finder window, you see all of the "Photo Booth" files, photos and videos, create a new folder in that location, I named mine "Old",
  6. Move all items that you can spare, if possible, all of them completely, (especially those created in previous OS majors) to a the new folder,
  7. Secondary Select (or 2 finger pad-select) to new folder to "Get Info",
  8. Make an informational note on the the folder adding searchable keywords and, if your files and folders are organized by color, apply color-code,
  9. Reboot Mac !

  1. Open Photo Booth,
  2. take 1 photo and one 15 second video (hold your tongue left and eyes looking right.) 😝 (This is to coordinate the new folder, from what I gather)
  3. Close Photo Booth,

  1. Open Apple Audio MIDI Setup Application located in Applications > Utilities > Apple Audio MIDI setup
  2. Check that these settings are indeed still there:

Close the MIDI application, make sure it quits,

This part is the most important, as long as the above is all going well:

  1. close every application and anything that is open, including file browsers, any browsers and make sure they are not holding their place, that means closing all open sessions !!!
  2. close it all having no memory sessions on the mac, aka: nothing opening where you left off, no sessions or place-holding in applications,
  3. Turn off any kind of background Malware / Cookie / Virus protection, ensuring it won't start-up automatically for this part
  4. Turn off FileVault (this may take some time) - it is encrypting whilst video recording !
  5. Edit any items in your start up profile, this allows for the next step to properly start without groggy login items,

So, now, nothing is going to begin when you start the mac,

  6. Shut down and start up the mac, not allowing any customizations to open upon start-up Login-in (start-up items are usually misfits)

Freshly rebooted and no sessions goin' on, it's completely fresh:

Use Photo Booth (without any other intense applications opened - especially those that use plug-ins.) You'll begin to have a trainable mac as plugins are not necessary, your mac can work as intended.

The above should work.

If this doesn't work, I'll do some testing on some of my iMacs, Airs and Macbook Pros to see if there is a difference and post back.

Good Luck ! 😀

I did all the above except I wasn't sure how to edit any items in start up profile. I tried photo booth and the 1st video was synced, but subsequent ones still get more and more out of whack....

So how do I "Edit any items in my start up file?" Also, how do I check if memory sessions are closed?

You seem to be on to something here, this is the closest thing to a fix that I've had, thank you!

I'm having the same issue. Bought my MacBook pro 1 week ago (on 10-16-12). Need Photo Booth video for acting rehearsals. First videos taken have audio & video out of sync. I read this discussion thread and adjusted my settings as per the suggestions. No improvement. Still out of sync. I'm running OS X 10.8 which is the most recent version. Mountain Lion is awful, this is not the first problem with it. Anybody have other suggestions for syncing up the audio and video together in Photo Booth?

Oct 25, 2012 6:50 AM in response to nealfeinberg

I've had to pull it all into iMovie, find the place where audio begins to lag behind lips, clip, find the next section where the audio lag increases and clip there. Detach the audio from video, Move the audio to sync with the video and it is fine. iMovie seems to take somewhat better iSight video, there are also many Apps in the App store that have fixes to this issue.

Try iMovie and test it hard to see what you think...

My Photo Booth began doing this again, after a reboot. Many say it is because of migration tool moving items from previous macs to new macs and the Genius Bar said to do a fresh OS install, Fresh Application install and go from there. I've done this and everything worked great for a couple of weeks. Then it begins to deteriorate.
