512 SSD

Hi all,

I'm thinking of upgrading my 128GB SSD on my MBP 15" late 2011 to a 512GB SSD.

From what I read, Samsung and Vertex 4 are apparently the top ones - please correct me if I'm wrong - and as both sit in the same price range these days, which one you would recommend to go with?

Cheers

Go here - http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx - and select the System Scanner tab. Crucial will recommend the drive that is best suited for your machine. Mine (and I suspect Bimmers) is a M4-CT512M4SSD2 (m4 model with a 512GB capacity). I wouldn't order from Crucial, though, as Amazon had better pricing - here.

When you're nearing a decision, Bimmer and I can help you through the installation process (Bimmer has a better track record as he's installed far more SSDs than I have!).

Yes, the Kingston HyperX is at 480GB.....

Go with the Crucial M4 and you'll be happy with the way it performs.....Any part number will work for you....One is a bare drive and one is a bundled drive - if you go for a bundle kit - you'll get the sata transfer cable if you plan on cloning your drive - if you're going for a clean install, then just get the bare drive...

Keep in mind - Kingston Hyper X and the Intel 520 are the only SSD with 5K Nand and the rest are 3K Nand which is why the Kingston Hyper X and Intel 520 are very expensive.

5K Nand = 5000 Programs / Erase life

3K Nand = 3000 Programs / Erase life

Hope I didn't confuse both you can Clinton with the 3K and 5K Nand difference

I knew you'd be back...

Ok our Crucial M4 has a 3K MLC Nand = 3000 times you can fill up your SSD to full capacity and format before it becomes useless.

5K MLC Nand = 5000 times you can fill up your SSD to full capcity and format before it becomes useless.

So does that mean for someone like me who never ends up filling the whole capacity would not make any difference??!

yes, it's something you don't need to worry about - by the time your SSD decides pack it in, you would've probably upgraded it to a 2TB SSD - when it becomes available and is much cheaper...

this is just techno talk between Clinton and myself and to let you know why the Kingston HyperX is very expensive.
