1st gen apple tv.

I have a 1st gen apple tv. I have always and only streamed from my 1T TC. What has heppened is: it follows menus to the selected movie and when i select the movie, the 1st 1 second of video plays and then freezes. The audio continues for i don't know how long because i stop it. I have tried to sync a movie to it (wirelessly) and it tells me i have to open port 336(?)

1. Anyone know how i can fix the streaming? or how to open a port so i can try syncing...

I'd rather stream as i have 100's of movies to stream

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion, 1st and 3rd gen apple tv

Big mistake! Not sure what your goal is there but it F'd things up...i had to restore. Coulda been something i did, doubt it tho....

I'd say he was trying to help you out.

The terminal command would have opened port 336 by creating a new firewall rule.

That port however as WC mentioned is not actually used by AppleTV normally.

Have you modified/hacked the software to add extra functionality?

Photos sync and therefore slideshows work much better.

Content is in the main menus and the library loads when connected. With a streaming only library, content is under a shared menu and doesn't load until you go to it, this makes everything much faster.

Changes to your library are instantly available, you don't need to reload the library for changes to take effect.

There are quite a few other advantages which I forget now because I don't use streaming libraries all that often.

This is a kind of old post, so I'm not sure if it's still an issue for you. I spent a lot of time trolling the web, talking to tech support and did not get any resolution until I started thinking about the WiFi aspect.

I found that the issue was that the ATV is an old 11n draft device and my router is a newer 11n "final" device. I'm assuming that after one of the background router upgrades, the protocols were no longer compatible. I can't say for sure, because like you, it worked, then one day didn't. I could see it in I tunes, but it would not sync more than a couple of files. Got the firewall error message, would endlessly try to sync, dropped the ATV altogether, etc.

I fixed this by creating a new network using my iMac Air Port, which is also 11n draft and connecting the ATV to that network. Worked like a charm. You need to enable internet sharing on that network for the ATV to see it. Internet sharing is in the "sharing" preferences, not network.

Good luck.
