App Store Updates (but only Updates) cannot connect to iTunes Store

The App Store icon on my homescreen shows I have 6 updates waiting to download.

When I go to App Store > Updates it says "Cannot connect to iTunes Store".

I can browse online with Safari so have internet connectivity. Every other tab in the App Store (e.g. Top 25) connects and I can download new apps. I can also access the iTunes store by using the iTunes icon - I can view and download anything from iTunes. The ipod touch can therefore connect to the iTunes Store, but for some reason the App Store Updater cannot.

I'm using OS 5.1.1, have searched the forums, shutdown and restarted the ipod, checked the DNS, logged out and in of my iTunes account, used different wi-fi networks, but no progress. Any tips would be massively appreciated !

I was also having this issue after updating to the latest crap software update in iOS 5.1.1. it seams in the update that it changes the date to be set automatic. by following schan20 suggestion, it will allow for the updates to work again. sure wish I could get the old 4.3xxx iOS again. nothing but problems with apples updates both on my 4th gen iPod and iPhone. when it's time for a battery replacement (which won't be long now) changing to a android device for sure. apple is either love them or hate them. I'm the latter

I was having this problem on my iPhone 4 iOS 5.1.1. If I went to the Apps store on my phone and clicked on Updates I'd get an error stating "cannot connect to iTunes store" but I was able to download new apps or even update apps if I did a search for the app and updated it from the apps page, it just wouldn't let me use the Updates page on the Apps store.

I read that it may be a WiFi issue even though I was clearly connected since I could download new apps. But I went ahead and tried using 3G instead of my WiFi and resetting the network connections and trying my WiFi again but the problem still occurred. I tried on another iPhone 4 that was connected to the same WiFi and it worked fine so I knew it wasn't my WiFi and the Apple update servers were working.

I tried resetting all settings from my phone and yep the problem was still there.

I didn't try increasing the date than setting it back but I did try turning off the auto date and making sure that it was the correct date and tried it with the manually set date, no luck, turned auto date setting back on and still I was unable to access the Updates page.

I tried turning the phone off and than back on.... You guessed it, still no updates page.

By this time I was frustrated and ready for bed so I opened iTunes on my PC and connected my phone, I figured I'd just try to get all of the updates through my PC and push them to the phone. Since I rarely use iTunes on my PC with my phone I clicked on my phone under Devices on the left hand side of the iTunes window than selected Apps from the menu for my iPhone. I was looking through to make sure all of my apps showed on this screen since there were a few I've added since I last synced with my PC, everything looked good and I couldn't find a update button on this screen so I clicked Apps from the menu on the left side of the iTunes window under the Library section and this made a pop up appear saying "You have changed the settings for the iPhone "iPhone 4". Would you like to apply these changes?", I figured this is to sync the new apps I've installed on my iPhone that weren't already on my PC's iTunes apps list so I clicked Apply. It starting syncing all of my apps from my phone to my PC, but since there were 116 apps I decided to sleep while it did this. Once I woke up I unplugged my phone and went on throughout my day, but before I left I clicked download all update from the PC's iTunes Apps page since I figured when I get home I'd go ahead and push the updates it downloaded while I was gone. Before I got home I decided ehhh why not try going to the Updates screen on my iPhone just to remind me why I got little sleep the night before and to my surprise it actually worked and showed that I had 26 apps which needed to be updated, but the Update All button didn't seem to work... So I decided to manually go in and update the programs one by one which thankfully did work now (I did a max of 3 updates running at the same time during this process). Once I got the total number of apps which needed to be updated down to about 9 (started with 26 apps that needed updates) I decided to try the Update All button again and FINALLY it worked and appears that my iPhone is finally working like it should be.

I don't know if it was a combination of the steps that I did that finally made it work or if it was just the syncing of my iPhones current apps with my PC's iTunes but I'm happy it finally works correctly. There's a chance that it could be caused by the number of apps that need updates since the Update All button was acting up until I got the total number down.... But I still don't know why syncing my phone's apps with iTunes on my PC would actually fix anything since I never actually updated any of the apps on my phone while it was connected to my PC, but if it works it works so I'm happy now 🙂

So after a while of having this problem, I read up on it. But what I found out from experimenting is that you have to close the app store completely by double tapping the home button from the home screen, then holding down on the app store square till the little minus sign comes up. Then you have to change the date to farther than you've ever changed it before (it was 2036 for me). Then when you go back to the app store you will get the security message. From there go back to the date and time and set it to auto set the date. Then go back to the app store and the update section will be accessible to you. But remember to change the date to farther than you've ever changed it before.

Hope this helps!

I can't update or install new apps on my iPod Touch. However, no issues on my Mac.

To the people that this hasn't worked for...make sure you close the app in the multi-tasking bar first before changing the date and then when you reload the app store it should now present you with the security error and then just change the date and time back like schan20said and the app updates will be working 🙂

I got this message after I tried your steps:

User uploaded file

I tapped OK and reset the date but I still can't install or update apps on my iPod. I just get a perpetual "Waiting" message.😟Also, I cleared all apps in the multi-task bar but it makes no difference.

Now that you get that message, go back to your date and time in your settings and set the date to auto set, then go back to the app store and it should work.

If you haven't done anything with your date and time them go change the year to 2020 or whenever you want in the future, then go to your app store, then you should get that message and press okay, then go back to your date and time and set it to autoset and then the app store should be open.

Thanks for responding so quickly, HOLEPUNCH! Unfortunately, that's exactly what I did earlier (I apologize -- I should have made that clear) but it still didn't work for me.😟 I still got the perpetual "Waiting" message. So, I gave up trying to get the updated apps on my iPod so I got them on my Mac and then synced my iPod.

However, I waited a couple of hours and things have changed for the better. I suspect now it's something on Apple's side because I was having all sorts of other problems with my Apple ID on my iPod but not on my Mac earlier today that have gone away without any intervention on my part. For example, earlier today if I tapped Updates and then tapped Purchased I got an error message. Now, it works fine. Also, I can download new apps which I couldn't do earlier today.

A few years ago I also had a similar problem that also cleared itself after a day or today. The consensus then was it was some sort of issue on Apple's side. So, I suspect updates will work next. Either way, I will follow-up.

I followed Holepunches instructions to the dot. Remove app store from tasking, set dats into future, then return. Howver, even though I set the date to 2033, the app store still knows it's 2012. Meaning, after I set the future date, I don't get the "security concern" screen, I still get the "Cannot connect to Itunes store". It's as if I never removed it from task manager, and set future date, but I DID. How do I get the appstore to believe it's 2033, not 2012?

I had spent hours trying the following: resetting the wifi router, restarting and power cycling the IPAD, changing DNS address, installing new apps, re-installing apps that were priviously deleted, deleing and re-installing many apps, changing the date to may different years and months, changing the time and AM/PM settings. None of that worked.

Then I changed the time and date setting to 24 hour time and that is what worked for me. I can now do updates from the App Store
