App Store Updates (but only Updates) cannot connect to iTunes Store

The App Store icon on my homescreen shows I have 6 updates waiting to download.

When I go to App Store > Updates it says "Cannot connect to iTunes Store".

I can browse online with Safari so have internet connectivity. Every other tab in the App Store (e.g. Top 25) connects and I can download new apps. I can also access the iTunes store by using the iTunes icon - I can view and download anything from iTunes. The ipod touch can therefore connect to the iTunes Store, but for some reason the App Store Updater cannot.

I'm using OS 5.1.1, have searched the forums, shutdown and restarted the ipod, checked the DNS, logged out and in of my iTunes account, used different wi-fi networks, but no progress. Any tips would be massively appreciated !

WOW, what chaos the iOS6 and iLife apps updates brought to the iOS universe in the past month! There is simply no excusing Apple for disruption of this amount, not just with this problem (which I solved with the future date trick, after a few tries...Thanks!!), but with iPhoto syncing, iTunes 10.7 disasters, of course 'Maps,' and the list keeps growing. Too bad for Apple, it is certainly becoming clear that Tim is not Steve and has no ability to make sure something is "insanely great" before allowing it to be released. Yes, Apple will survive without my comments affecting them (or yours for that matter); however, the stock that was once $700+ per share is currently fallen to $625 per share (10% drop in less than 30 days). This speaks volumes, and in fact may erode any profit from the iPhone 5 / iOS 6 debuts!

Thanks for everyone's help here...my wife's iPod touch is back in order under iOS 5.1.1. (I'm dreading upgrading her iPhone 4 to iOS 6...I can't stand the couch!)

I've solved so:

- totally closed app store;

- in settings I've changed the time zone (no automatic) and set a different time zone;

- run App Store and then voilà finally show upgrade app.

Note that I've tried all combination of different year, App Store background or not, etc. and also DNS google 8.8.8.8.
