I purchased an iPhone 5 in January and have never been able to send a picture through Messages to anyone without an iPhone, unless Mobile Data is switched on. Text messages without pictures are OK. I initially thought that the problem related to the size of the picture, so my wife sent me a very small 90kb picture from her android phone. It did not arrive on my phone until I switched Mobile Data on. I then tried to send it back to her but again, it would only send if Mobile Data was on.

This problem was apparent before the latest software update, so it has probably been in the '5' since it came out. It is about time that Apple sorted this out, as it is crazy to have such a basic fault on a sophisticated and expensive phone.

You do realize that sending a picture with a text (MMS) requires data, that is why it will not send without Mobile data switched on. iMessage, however, while it uses data, works between iOS devices. It can work on wifi as well as cellular data. A regular MMS to a non-iPhone will only work via cellular, and it has to be cellular data. The difference between an SMS (text) and MMS (text plus pictures).

Thanks for the comments. Maybe I'm missing something here.

My previous non iPhone (a pretty basic Nokia without 3G ) sent text messages and picture messages through my network provider without any problem. My iPhone 5 will not. It will also send texts over my home network with wifi enabled, although if they include a picture, it will not. As soon as Mobile data (3G) is switched on, everything works fine.

I have checked with my network provider (EE), who say that the problem is with the phone and not with them. Needless to say, the Apple store say that the problem is with the provider!

The way the iPhone handles MMS is a littel different than the older basic phones supported MMS. The only way for you to send an MMS to a non iOS device is to have mobile data turned on. Your provider should have been able to explain the data usage for MMS. It seems to me your device is working the way it is supposed to. If you go into Settings>Messages, do you have a switch for MMS Messaging? Is that turned on?

I am beyondddddddddddd IRRITATED!!! I have had my Iphone 5 for a month...and I cant send pictures to anyone that does not have a IPHONE. It is soooo annoying.....as much as we pay for these phones, there should be no reason that i am experiencing this issue. On top of that I keep getting dropped calls....I have called Sprint and they blame it on Apple..and then Apple blames it on Sprint. It would be nice if someone could accept responsibility for this issue. It is sooooo annoying

Hello,

this problem just started to happen with mew couple of weeks ago, I have iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1.1 iMessage was working fine between me and another iPhone 4S with iOS 6.1.3.

suddenly couple of weeks ago I'm not receiving pictures sent from iOS 6.1.3 device, although occasianally i am receiving while on WiFi but not while on 3G.

today I'm just not receiving pics at all!!! I tried signing out and in again, deactivating and reactivating iMessage, reboot devices, change the caller ID to Appl ID instead on phone number but no use!!!

I'm able to send pics but unable to receive although on the other device it shows "Delivered"

Any ideas? solution??

Cheers!!

PS: Hope iOS 7 comes out bug free 😉 or will it be free bugs??

For the past couple months, my Sprint iPhone 5 will not send photos via MMS. Whenever I try to send them, it pretends like it's sending it until it inevitably fails and shows the failed send notification for a fraction of a second before it will automatically send via MMS (which it does successfully). This process causes the photo to not deliver as quickly and seems to be a bug still. I have all data turned on (and of course, I have MMS turned on). Any ideas or recommendations? Or do we all need to wait for the next major update for this to be fixed? P.S. I have 3 iphone 5's on my plan, and the two here in Portland (the other is in Kansas City) do this... Any ideas?

I hope this fix the problem for you all..

Hello,

I've recently had the same problem.

It was also only with the person I text with the most and send pictures to the most.

I tried the usual fixes (turning the iMessage off, rebooting the phone; resending the message over and over only to be told "delivered" and a few seconds later get the red exclamation mark; then I even upgraded my OS) and nothing worked.

It turned out the problem was actually on the receiving end - my husband was able to send me pictures but he couldn't receive. I had him do the first fix (settings/imessage/turn off and restart the phone, then back to settings/imessage/turn it on and wait for it activate and check if you can send it) and everything worked like a charm again.

Hope this helps.

Tanya

I forgot about this thread... I would like to update everyone on how I fixed this problem:

It finally came down to doing a complete iphone reset and starting from scratch (not reloading the backup). The backup contained APN's from my previous service provider (T-Mobile - now with Sprint) that were sticking even if I reset network settings or anything else. This was my solution: Start from scratch. 😟
