Really bizarre. Hearing some people suggest that it's a problem on Apple's end is discouraging, as it suggests anything else I try may automatically fail. Yet if I can use the App Store from another user account, that suggests there has to be something lurking in my main account's Library (probably) that's causing the problem...
After running around in circles trying to get this resolved for me I finally found a (fairly easy) solution - the key point here is that the AppStore works just fine form another user account on the same computer (using the same AppleID) so it has to be something in ~/Library rather than /Library (thus ruling out the NetworkInterfaces.plist fix - which I tried and which didn't work for me).
Here is a step-by-step of what worked for me:
What does this do? It seems that the com.apple.appstore.plist file in your normal user account has become corrupted - we use a new account and create a new one (which is interchangebale since we use the same AppleID) and move that one back to the main account with the corrupt file.
Resetting the network adapters to ensure that the wired/Ethernet interface was first one and working resolved it. Using an external wireless was the problem.
OK been talking to Apple and this seems to be the answer - for me anyway -
Go to Finder/Computer/Library/Preferences/networkinterfaces.plist and delete networkinterfaces.plist
delete it from trash too then restart.
I've had the same problem. I went through all the troubleshooting that others have mentioned here, as well as some other things.
I have spent a couple of hours on the phone with Apple support, and they suggested a few other things, as well as reinstalling the OS from my recovery partition (which I did).
Still no joy.
Interestingly, this problem does not happen when I log into the Mac as another (test) user. That user has just the standard OS installed with no add ons, and no non-Apple system tweaks (such as 1Password, Weatherbug, etc).
My fourth phone call with Apple suggested that I wipe the hard drive, reinstall the OS from the recovery partition and a Time Machine backup. Finally, they said that this is an issue "on their end" that they are working on, and they hope to have a fix for it, but offered no timeframe.
Not that big a deal for me, because I can always log into the other account and update important stuff. Otherwise, I'll wait for the fix.
Same here. I have a secondary user account that works fine with the App Store, but my main account only generates "unknown error".
I've tried different Apple IDs, changing passwords, deleting and trashing caches and preferences and networkinterfaces.plist and every other file mentioned in this thread and others... and, of course, plenty of restarts and permission repairs and Safe Boot starts and what not. Everything but reinstallation (the one length I'm not willing to go for this problem).
All no good; my main account only spits out "unknown error" when trying to log in to the App Store.

Interesting, too, that different things are working for different people. I hope some more new solutions pop up, for those of us who still have no help! My thanks to everyone offering suggestions –

You can remove the cookie directly in your account (`rm Library/Cookies/com.apple.appstore.plist`), when AppStore starts new cookie will be created. I think it's one of many hints in this thread and it does not work for me.
I tried deleting the plist too and it didn't work for me either - while the AppStore created a new com.apple.appstore.plist it was completely empty so it didn't work. Creating the file form another account and copying over worked (as that cookie is not corrupt/empty) - give it a try…
I have the same problem. I have a MacBookPro upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion and no problem with my AppleID for Icloud, MacAppStore, FaceTime and iTunes. But using the same AppleID on the Imac upgraded also from Lion to Mountain Lion, the MacAppStore dont accept login, alltime i have the unknown error. Icloud, iTunes and Face Time working correctly. I've contacted Apple support and i've tried to move cache.db, com.apple.appstore.plist and com.apple.network.identification.plist to trash and then restart and try login on App Store, but it doesn't help. For making updates for apps on the Imac I must work now with a second user with administration rights, and I also used the same Apple ID for login on the App Store, and the App Store works correctly. I've looking on different communities, but I dont find the solution.
I was finally able to fix this. there was a small upgrade to my router that needed to be done.
After upgrading all my networking devices (WAP, Router) it was able to work.
thanks for all the suggestions.
This worked for me!!! Thank you! I tried everything else!!

No need to sign in first.
Deleting Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and then delete NetworkInterfaces.plist
Restarting. Going to the system prefs/network - saving then launching the app store.
Did the trick for me.
Hello .. , i'm fix this, i'm upgrade my macbook pro to Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and try this http://www.computersnyou.com/2012/09/an-unknown-error-has-occurred-app-store.htm l
I used another Mac login user account, logged into App Store with my regular mac address, downloaded the stuff on the other account, and use the software in my regular Mac login user account. 😀
I turned off Wi-Fi. I was using en0 and en1 on my laptop. That fixed it for me.
In Mountain Lion, I just used ONYX v2.74 and did a fullMaintenance Cleaning > SYSTEM + USER + INTERNET + FONTS + LOGS.
Restart the Mac.
Log back into App Store.
All Updates now work great.
iPhone fix
Go to settings
Click on the app store
Click on user ID ( email address)
Click on user info
This also turned off the music and app download buttons in the app store
Look at info and in my case I needed to approve new apple rules.
I also needed to add security code for cc on file
Save
Then the error went away
My problem is clearly not network related. If I create another user and login as that user then use my account with App Store then I can successfully log in. Must be something in my own account.
I've tried all the other things like removing ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/Cache.db and ~/Library/Cookies/com.apple.appstore.plist. There must nbe another corrupted file somewhere in my account that is causing the problem.
