iTunes match not connecting

I keep getting the below issue when trying to update itunes match:

we could not complete your itunes store request. The network connection was lost. There was an error in the itunes store. please try again later

it is so frustrating! I've turned itunes match off and when I tried to turn it back on I get the same message again.

Anyone any ideas on how to fix this? It's been doing it for the past 6 hours

Thanks!

I had the failed to connect problem for days. I finally performed the steps that were outlined by Ken and resolved the issue finally.

The exact steps that I used, running on OS 10.8.2 with iTunes 10.7, were:

1) Turn Off iTunes Match

2) Turn Off Genius

3) Quit iTunes

4) Launch iTunes

5) Turn On Genius

6) WAIT for Genius to complete sucessfully

7) Turn On iTunes Match

8) WAIT while it fails to start several times (BUT WITHOUT THE OLD ERROR MESSAGE)

9) Within 5-10 minutes, iTunes Match finally completed sucessfully.

I think iTunes Match took longer than normal because I had a lot of Network traffic at the time.
