Magic Mouse keeps losing connection

For the past several days, my magic mouse keeps losing connection to my MacBook Pro, and most of the time it won't even connect at all. I thought the batteries needed changing at first, but that didn't help either. I keep going into my Bluetooth settings to try and manually connect it but, again, it didn't work. Can anyone suggest ways to try to fix this problem?

I had this problem too, turns out a slight design flaw with the mouse is that smaller batteries come loose and power is lost, so the bluetooth dies. You'll probably find that it loses connection when you're moving it around quite a lot, in particular, when you lift it up off of the desk and put it back down again. See, different brands of battery tend to be ever so slightly varied in size, and smaller ones tend to be more 'loose' in the mouse and an be shaken loose when moving the mouse around.

The best solution (the one which worked for me) is to grab a set of Apple's own rechargeable batteries from their store as they are just the right size to fit in the mouse without ever being shaken loose.

If you can't do this, some people find that wedging a bunch of paper between the two batteries and between the batteries and the mouse door can help keep them in place.

I hope this solves your problem as it has mine. 🙂

Hi People,

You will be surprised what solved the problem for me.

Apart from wedging paper, what I found was if you clean the + positive connection inside the mouse thoroughly then the problem is solved!

The reason why wedging is ok is because you are putting more pressure on the batteries. The dirt accumulated will be squashed and it connects. After a while dirt accumulates again and you need more paper.

Its actually the dirt that is preventing the batteries from connecting and I bet no one ever cleans the connections! Try it!

I can' tell you how helpful this was. I had a Mighty Mouse that was working fine and then started dropping out constantly with a brand new set of batteries. I switched out the batteries for some slightly larger (both were Amazon brand rechargeable), and I haven't had any problems since. I was looking at buying a new Mighty Mouse 2, assuming my mouse had finally died on me, but this solution fixed that.

I was facing the same issue :-( but found solution. Actually i was using normal AA batteries where after using 40 - 50% mouse used to get disconnect frequently. It was heavy day, i've tried all given option mean keeping paper between batteries... deleting mouse and adding it again... but non of work. While on system preferences my batteries was remaining 54%. I jump to the store and got alkaline batteries since no issues.

Don't follow stupid things if not connecting means very simply short of power... change the source of power and enjoy :-)

This problem, of the Magic Mouse losing bluetooth connection, started a week ago. The mouse is at least 7 years old. The rechargeable batteries are the originals supplied with the Apple Battery Charger. The OS is El Capitan. So that eliminates the problems other users have mentioned earlier in Dec 2015. So I wedged a folded piece of paper in between the two batteries. I will see whether this solves the problem.

This is a one off reply as this has, as you say, been going on for ages. (Sept 2012).

Packing the mouse suggests you are using low grade or fake batteries. The problem is the length of the batteries; low level or fake batteries are too short. Hence the need to either pack over the top or insert tin foil. If you buy dime a dozen you can expect no better. Use energiser, Envelop, Duracell or Apple.

I experienced the same problem. Turns out for me the positive side of the battery connector was slightly loose and would cause the connection to drop. To fix this I made a small foil ball out of a hershey kiss wrapper and placed it in the small circular opening. Then the battery connection was good. I also placed a small piece of paper to keep everything tight. It makes me wonder what other types of scrap people are shoving in their apple mouses to keep them working. You would think that an $80 mouse would be a bit more dependable.

As I wrote, I wasn't saying it applied to you ... though you did not say which batteries you were actually using. Duracell and Energiser would be thought of as appropriate (along with Eneloop and Apple). You seem to be doubly unfortunate as far as having two faulty mice is concerned. Why didn't you take them back for exchange. They would have had a 12 month guarantee on them, quite long enough to discover the problem.
