Magic Mouse keeps losing connection

For the past several days, my magic mouse keeps losing connection to my MacBook Pro, and most of the time it won't even connect at all. I thought the batteries needed changing at first, but that didn't help either. I keep going into my Bluetooth settings to try and manually connect it but, again, it didn't work. Can anyone suggest ways to try to fix this problem?

I had this problem too, turns out a slight design flaw with the mouse is that smaller batteries come loose and power is lost, so the bluetooth dies. You'll probably find that it loses connection when you're moving it around quite a lot, in particular, when you lift it up off of the desk and put it back down again. See, different brands of battery tend to be ever so slightly varied in size, and smaller ones tend to be more 'loose' in the mouse and an be shaken loose when moving the mouse around.

The best solution (the one which worked for me) is to grab a set of Apple's own rechargeable batteries from their store as they are just the right size to fit in the mouse without ever being shaken loose.

If you can't do this, some people find that wedging a bunch of paper between the two batteries and between the batteries and the mouse door can help keep them in place.

I hope this solves your problem as it has mine. 🙂

As an electronic engineer, having the same problems and seeing so many discussion groups on the matter, it is baffling. Because the solution is so stupidly simple. I put some aluminum foil on the + sides of the batteries and for the first time all works 100%. The mouse even connects itself, what it nearly never did before. All the other stuff like reset PRAM etc. is a waste of time. I forgot who gave me the tip but that was GREAT. Now where are the Apple engineers?

OK, if it is not the aluminum solution (see my post) that helps, difficult to say. How do you sync? Wifi? Or other? As the mouse uses bluetooth, I am not sure it could get "confused" by your iPad. Very strange. Maybe useles tip but try to sync with wifi off, use cable, and ipad also no wifi (my old iPad has no bluetooth, not sure aboput the new ones). I sync with the cable to USB port, no issues. But sure try the aluminum paper trick. Worked magis.

I have two MM on different computers. I notice that one looses the connection more easily than the other, but will always get it back after waiting several seconds and tapping it on the desk once or twice. For the most part, I find using Energizer AAs keeps a good connection, *UNTIL* the batteries start to get low. Then loosing the connection gets more frequent until they are replaced. I've yet to try using the Apple batteries or rechargables yet. I plan to order some today though.

No battery problem here, here is what I found. First, my grandson uses the keyboard and mouse constantly with his games that the batteries do get some hard work. And you have to keep your keyboard batteries up, as well as the mouse ones.

But here is what happened twice, one of our DOG HAIRS got stuck in the 'eye' of the mouse and once I took it out with tweezers, the mouse worked fine.

The piece of paper worked for me too for a while then I guess the paper lost its snugness so I'd have to change. I'm assuming not every mouse has this problem or this thread would be longer. The Engineers tin foil is working great so far and I agree with 'where are the Apple Engineers'

My question now is, if I take my mouse into an Apple Store will this be a known problem to Apple and they'll just replace my mouse?

Hi Guys,

I have this issue as well and the PRAM / SMC Reset didn't work. I have tried all the shutdown BT, restart system, re-enable BT and used Clean My Mac to dump the junk etc., - still got the problem. I am using MBP with Mobee Chargers for Apple Magic Mouse and BT Keyboard with Mobee rechargeable battery packs. Both have been working fine until very recently but now drop BT connections frequently - the mouse drops every few seconds. Had to resort to wired USB Mouse for now as cannot work with that.

The only recent addition to the desk has been an iPhone 5s - and this connects wirelessly to car system when out of office. Had an iPhone 4s until a few weeks ago.

Could this be the problem ? Has anyone else found this too ?

I feel compelled for the benefit of the community to add my two cents: aluminum foil worked for me, too. And what a relief. I was having a very frustrating time losing my connection—not something I'm accustomed to with Apple products. I have not lost the connection once since putting aluminum foil in underneath the negatives on both batteries.

I never used aluminum foil, but after beginning to use Apple's rechargable batteries, I haven't experienced the issue again. I'm fairly certain it is a combination slightly different battery sizes per the manufacture, and even varying tolerances in the Magic Mouse. I own 3, and one has more disconnectivity issues than the other two. One has never experienced them, and the other is intermittent. Energizers seem to work well, but I would recommend the Apple branded rechargables.

How strange. My mouse has been losing connection for a few days. It has been driving me mad, and I almost bought a new mouse. I had some rechargeable Duracell's in there. Swapped them for some Apple branded batteries and now it's working fine! I'm surprised that batteries can be different sizes. But so glad this works. Thanks, you saved me some money! :-P
