Apple USB SuperDrive with iMac question

From what I've read elsewhere. The Apple USB SuperDrive if connected to current iMac's will not be recognised.

I was wondering if it would be possible to connect the Apple USB SuperDrive to the iMac when it is used with/has a Virtual Machine with Parellels Desktop, would the Apple USB SuperDrive be then recognised in the Windows side?

Thanks in advance.

Great stuff, Stephenfromhalifax has really good news. Unfortunately, I tried and tried the Superdrive replacement route with the external usb Apple superdrive. I was not able to get it to work, so I returned the drive back to Best Buy and bought the LG GE24 DVD/CD drive. I plugged into my iMac and worked great. I burned a few CD's just to make sure. It seems to be much faster than the Apple superdrive, but unable to verify. The cost of the LG unit was 45 bucks, on sale. It is USB and it has a separate power cord, not driven by usb. Any way I am very pleased with the replacement drive

I tried the above but it didn't work. After some googling I found this link and I followed the instructions and it worked like a charm. The command above does the same thing as this. But here we are manually going and editing the file to add that entry.

I am burning a movie from my iMac which is hooked to a superdrive right now.. 🙂

Just to update this thread:

I got the late 2012 model iMac, which has you know doesn't have a CD/DVD drive. I purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive to use with it. I installed Parallels Desktop 8 and Windows 7 and I use the Apple USB SuperDrive in the Windows/Parallels Desktop side with no problems (which is what you would expect with the late 2012 model).

Thanks to everyone who has replied, I appreciate the help 🙂
