Somehow I have the application "DVD Player" in Launchpad, in my Application folder, and on my Desktop. I want to remove the icon from the desktop. If I drag the icon from the desktop to the Trash, the application will not open in Launchpad or from the application folder.
What steps do I need to follow to remove this misplaced icon from my desktop?

If macjack's suggestion doesn't work, Oopen /Applications/ ensure that the DVD Player is the app, then run this command in the Terminal app, hit the return key, type in your admin password, and hit the return key:
sudo rm -R ~/Desktop/"DVD Player.app"
Correction. Typed wrong command. It should be:
sudo rm -R /Applications//"DVD Player.app"
sudo rm -R /Applications/"DVD Player.app"
will work better. 😊
After entering the Terminal command, should the Desktop DVD Player icon be gone? Or should it now be moved to Trash or another area?
As I understand it, the Desktop DVD player is the "real" application. Therefore you want to move it into your /Appications folder. Use the "move" command, I posted. Copy & paste the following at the prompt...
mv ~/Desktop/"DVD Player.app" /Applications/"DVD Player.app"
Then, press return. This should move to Desktop item into /Applications where it belongs.
Here is a copy of my Terminal.

The annoying DVD Player icon remains on the Desktop.
That's because you did not copy and paste. The syntax is incorrect
-bash: mv~/Desktop/DVD Player.app/Applications/DVD Player.app: No such file or directory
you need the space after mv... and another
mv ~/Desktop/"DVD Player.app" /Applications/"DVD Player.app"
I used copy and paste with these results.

You will get a short lecture about sudo. Then you will be asked for your password, it will be invisible.
Enter it and press return.
That did the trick.
