This may not help everyone, but I haven't seen anyone mention it. My 4S died; I brought it home to charge overnight - nothing. Tried all the tricks/tips, still nothing. Carefully cleaned all the pocket lint out of the connector with a toothpick, connected it for 30 minutes (to see if it would come back on its own), then did the hard reboot (Power/Home buttons together). That worked. So if your connection doesnt seem tight, make sure its not full of lint! Hope this helps.

The same Problem has happen with me , My Iphone 4S get to black screen but does keep responding to touch and sounds are hearable. I tried restoring it and display came back but this problem has became more frequent now every other day the screen goes black and then I have to restore it back. In Black screen mode I can't even backup my data. however the problem was seem to be resolved when today I was sitting in the sun light and got a call the screen was black but I guessed the slider and answered the call. After when the call was ended I noticed that in sun light I was able to see a very little display of my phone that almost seemed black but actually was not since I was using ios 7 I pulled out the setting panel and reduced its brightness and then hard reset by iphone and display was back. Guys its not the problem of software and there is no bug in ios its hardware problem most probably of some IC and its replaceable. but if you keep it using in low brightness lets say below 80% it wont bother you. Some Application have builtin brighter effect can cause the same issue even if the brighness in setting is low. You can get it repaired but its better to claims warrenty if exist.
