I can't hear the caller during a phone call.

I have an iPhone 4. I was on a phone call and all of a sudden I could no longer hear the caller. I reset my phone and checked all the settings, but I still cannot hear the caller. The caller continues to hear me. If I turn on the speaker phone, I can hear the caller, but as soon as I turn it off, I hear nothing. Any ideas or suggestions on what I can do to fix this. Thank you!

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1

Hi,

I have an iphone 5 which I bought less than a year ago. It has a same issue I am not able to hear the voice whenever I call or some one call on my Iphone. Two weeks back I visited an apple store and they found it was an receiver issue which they replaced and my iphone was working fine for few days. Same problem reoccured and this it happen for some times and some times it works fine. I took it to apple store and explained them that the problem is not always but some times it is happening. The way the app store customer representative tried to reproduce the issue but it was not reproduced and he returned me the iphone saying it to reset to factory settings. I was surprised with such an response and solution. His response was as if my issue was not a geniune.

Not sure if my iphone will continue to work without any problems.

I had this problem earlier today. I was freaking out becasue i thought there was something broken with my phone- not being able to hear my text tone with full volume, nor hear a caller (although i could hear them). After doing some research, I noticed that when i pressed the volume buttons it was saying "headphones" instead of "ringer". I found out that there was lint in my headphone jack, which solved all of my issues. I took it all out and it worked! Completely fixed.

This happens on an iPhone 4 taht we have. It only happened after upgrading to iOS7 and, for whatever reason, when we removed the Otterbox Defender the phone worked like normal. The Otterbox folks have been great about trying to help address this, but it seems to be the shell or film and some setting or sensitivity in that iPhone under iOS7. Very frustrating. I put the same case/cover on another iPhone 4 also running iOS7 and no problems yet. Tried all the cleaning and resetting advice, but simply removing the case was the only thing that worked. Someting odd about that combination of that phone, that OS and that case. (It does not happen with the smaller Speck case.) Next experiment to remove the film on the Defender -- though that is not recommended by Otterbox. Any ideas from any developers about anything that changed in iOS7 about sesnitivity of the noice cancelling mic or the proximity sensor? Any setting (other than Bluetooth) to change -- already tried that.

Appears to be the audio compiler chip from all accounts. Either poorly done in manufacturing or bumped around enough to break the solder. Skype and Memo microphone work, but not once you make a call and that second microphone is used. All the remedies for bumping, squeezing, cases (on and off) may just be making a better/worse connection, but do not solve the issue.

I can't hear the caller during a phone call.
