We're too old to believe in Santa so this is our way of waiting up like kids for Christmas...let's just enjoy getting excited about something new, we sure paid enough for it.
From what I understand, you could be able to locate your tracking info through the UPS site before you get the email from Apple (they have to send out a lot of messages and you're just looking for one record). If you go to the UPS site and click the tracking tab, under "track by reference" and use your phone number as the shipment reference. I can't find anything under my number yet but as I said before, it looks like the records don't get entered until the plane lands in KY at the earliest. You can actually watch for live flight updates...this is totally the big kid Santa tracker. It seems all of the iPhones are coming on the UPS61 flights though so if the Oct 5th crowd doesn't get them on this one, from what I'm seeing it runs every Monday and Friday. First batch came on the Monday plane...

Also worth making note...Apple hasn't actually charged us yet. It's just a pending charge (a fund hold). I imagine they didn't want to assign anyone a box without knowing he or she could pay but at the same time, they can't actually charge you until they can prove or admit you're getting it. Based on the sheer volume of packages coming out of the Alaska facility and the possibility of delays/acts of God that could happen in transit, it's probably easier to wait until the devices come into the Midwest to do all of the paperwork necessary to finalize the transactions. The funds aren't available in your account (debit) or for spending (credit) but it's still just a pending charge.
I'm not a know it all but I am an analytical thinker so deductive reasoning stands to be of benefit in this situation. Glad to be able to share the theories =) Oh and we should know something in about 4 1/2 hours when that plane lands.
