wifi sync not working after ios6 update

Is anyone else having this problem. I updated to iOS 6 today on my iPhone 4s, everything else is working just fine, but wifi-sync isn't working, my phone doesn't appear in itunes until i plug it into my computer. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi all,

Uk user here, and my WiFi sync with iTunes seems to have stopped working since the upgrade to 11.0.1 of iTunes. I am running iOS 5 on an iPhone 4S so clearly it's not iOS 6 that has broken it for me.

Have tried all sorts of proposed solutions as put forward on these boards but to no avail. Am now about to try the complete uninstall and reinstall of iTunes, will report back...

I am using a PC running Windows 8. I followed the instructions, uninstalled everything. Shut down. Went back in an re-installed everything. It worked. For a while. Now it is back to doing the same thing. Does not recognize the iPhone. All software is that latest. There needs to be something in the software that would allow the user to search the wifi group for the iTunes app that is running. This is so frustrating. Worked fine prior to ios6.

I have taken an appointment to Genius Bar and will have to drive 120 kms back and forth to have the wifi running, I can't believe that nobody from Apple is putting out a statement. This post has been viewed 62,272 times - and no solution proves to work to a full restore of WiFi connectivity after installing 6.0.2

Will the store reimburse me? If there is no Apple solution out there, what can employees do to protect the reputation of their beloved company?

Wonderful. Now let's see them explain why my Windows unit connected only via Wi-Fi has exactly the same symptoms. I still have the challenge with the AppleMobileDevice service chewing up one processor for every Apple device that has done a wireless sync with that computer. I have exactly the same symptoms regardless if my Windows computer is connected via Wi-Fi or physically via cable.

Reading through this log there is ample evidence that the challenge is with the software on the computer and not anywhere on the network or the apple devices themselves although these might increase the probability of the problem surfacing.

Good news is that my devices will sync via cable consistently so this has become an extreme frustration rather than a true problem for me.

At some point Apple will stop spending resources on wonderful items like Apple Maps and fix this feature that affects their core product usage.

EXACTLY!! That is why the fixes of changing cellular settings or holding your phone over your head while standing on one foot make no sense. On a lighter note, I WAS able to get my devices to ALL sync via WiFi late last night...once. Then it stopped working again, until I restarted my PC. What finally did it for me was this Microsoft support action that disables ALL IPv6 on your machine. Found on this page (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929852) about 1/3 down the page. Disable IPv6, Microsoft Fix it 50409. Hopefully this is a beginning to an end for this.

This thread has beeng going on so long that it has actually become humorous for me to follow now that I have given up any hope that Apple will pay attention.

I agree with KHuhn, there is no point messing around with the cellular (3/4G) settings when the problem occurs across multiple iOS devices including my kids iPod Touches (no 3G to turn off there!!!)

Nothing I have tried works consistently - but for the sake of posters following me, I have summarized this post into the things that people have said works as a work around (note - none of these are fixes - just work arounds - Apple needs to FIX THIS PROBLEM).

What we know:

  • Problem is not specific to any Apple iOS device - occurs on iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone (various generations)
  • Problem is a problem - as it WAS working, and now its not after ITunes upgrades
  • Problem is not O/S Specific - it happens on MACs and PCs
  • It happens whether or not you use wi-fi directly, or connected through a router (it used to work so why do we need to change our behaviour here Apple? even if that were correct)
  • syncing by cable generally will always work - its a wifi only issue - though I have had one example of this process corrupting a iPod Touch to the point that a full reset was the only way to fix it (it would not forget a sync in progress, no matter how many times we powered off and on and tried to restart a sync).
  • Windows Firewall is not the problem for most people - the same issue occurs even if all firewall's are disabled
  • Any work around appears at best to be temporary

The more likely paths to resolution:

  • khuhn says disable ipv6 - that may well be a possible workaround- however I had IPv6 running on windows well before this issue arose, and I don't want to disable IPv6 for long term solution
  • AppleMobileDevice service eventually consumes large CPU time - restarting it makes some of our devices appear and work for a short while
  • amrobx has downgraded all the way back to 10.6.3 which is now recognised as the last working version of iTunes (see people - nothing to do with IOS version, or device type - its the ITunes version!!) Its working with iOS 5 and 6 - but not sure it will work with newer generation devices
  • Apple has said that it will only work on windows with a computer using wireless, not wired. This doesn't mean adhoc direct wireless connection as some people have posted - this doesn't make any difference for me
  • For Mac users : Article #HT1747 - iTunes: How to remove and reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service on Mac OS X 10.6.8 or Earlier - This has had some success apparently
  • After restarting the PC (which is same as restarting applemobiledevice service really) there maybe some evidence if your pc doesn't go to sleep, or hibernate - it will keep working - perhaps consider switching off the setting to allow Windows to power down the network card to save power
  • some people say that removing the dash from the computer name if you have one works - however I had no dash - same problem (this work around may be Mac specific).
  • fapapa says setting the hostname on a Mac solves the problem - ( scutil --set Hostname "your-macs-name" ) - though it may have just been the reboot after that solved it temporarily as others have since indicated

I maintain the most frustrating part of this is the lack of any intelligent responses from Apple - whether it be through acknowledging the issue, through phone support, or through their (not so) Genius Bars.

Am I just being sceptical, but could it be that Apple just want everyone to use iCloud?

Might be something to that afterall - Apple don't appear to be too concerned about this problem after almost 3 months, 62000+ views and 250+ replies - oh and at least 3 Itunes updates since the original post.
