wifi sync not working after ios6 update

Is anyone else having this problem. I updated to iOS 6 today on my iPhone 4s, everything else is working just fine, but wifi-sync isn't working, my phone doesn't appear in itunes until i plug it into my computer. Anyone have any ideas?

It is just barely possible that the new iTunes fixed the problem. Here's why I say so.

Until I installed the new iTunes, I could never get my iPad (3rd gen) to sync via WiFi when it was connected to AC power--the only time it would sync was when it was not connected to AC. iOS 6.1 did not solve this problem.

This morning I installed the new iTunes and ran it. The iPad was not connected to AC. In the past, iTunes would have recognized the iPad. This time it did not do so.

So I tried putting the iPad in its charging dock. Much to my surprise, iTunes recognized it and immediately started syncing with it. This has not happened since I installed 6.0.

As many other people have noticed, it is entirely possible that this behavior is temporary and it will soon break again. Nevertheless, this is clearly a change in behavior and I am hoping it is for the better.

I guess I should install iOS 6.1.2 as well and see if anything still works.

My iPad Mini is recognized via wifi without fail. My iPhone 4 when connected to a charger at the time I start iTunes is never seen from the get go.

I have to do one of 3 actions for my iPhone to be see by iTunes.

1. Disconnect my iPhone from the charger so that it automatically turns off the wifi radio when it goes into sleep mode. Once I wake it up the wifi radio comes back and iTunes sees it.

2. I turn off and turn on the wifi radio on my HP laptop, iTunes for some reason then sees my iPhone 4.

3. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service in the Sevices list.

I seem to remember not having to do any of this with the latest version of iTunes 10 before iTunes 11 came out. At that time, I could leave my devices plugged in when I started iTunes and they would just be seen automatically.

I really hope Apple comes out with fix soon because as it stands they have dropped the ball on this feature.

I also think that this is a Bonjour issue. Personally, my wi-fi syncing has seemed to resolve itself. The one thing that I did try early on was to turn off and then back on wi-fi on my Mac. That would seem to temporarily fix whatever this really is and I only wound up doing that a couple of times. But of late I have noticed that everything seems to be operating just fine. My advice is to just hold tight and stop fiddling with all the settings as I imagine this may further complicate the issue once Apple finally resolves the setting or coding issue that seems to be causing havoc on a lot of peoples' systems. At least, if you do make changes, keep track of exactly what they are so that you can change them back at a later date.

I have heard that Bonjour is utilized somehow with iOS device and iTunes wi-fi syncing. I'm not sure how exactly. I think I read before that it had to do with iTunes being able to discover the iOS devices on your home network. I have looked around for a way to check for Bonjour errors on a Mac and I have not come back with anything concrete. I did though come across this article http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57526060-263/use-wi-fi-diagnostics-to-find- active-bonjour-services-in-os-x/ and perhaps it could point in the right direction. The article points out that Mountain Lion does have an Apple Wi-Fi Diagnostics Utility which...includes a Bonjour Services Browser: "One of the updated features in Mountain Lion is Apple's Wi-Fi Diagnostics utility, which in its latest version includes a Bonjour Services browser. To access this browser, open the utility from the /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder or hold the Option key before clicking the Wi-Fi menu bar icon, and you will see an option to open the Wi-Fi diagnostics. In this utility, press Command-7 or choose Bonjour Services from the View menu, and the tool will list each service that is available from computers on the local network." Maybe this could help or at least lead to an answer on that.

Thanks ST67. I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion just to be able to check out that diagnostic utility. The Bonjour Window within the utility shows all of the devices utilizing bonjour and each has a green light next to it for me.

There is an option to Create a Diagnostic Report that says "collects information about Bonjour services, nearby networks, Wi-Fi performance and runs a number of diagnostic tests." I ran the report, which generates two tar archives, but I'm really not sure what to look for within those archives.

Anyone?

You might just see if the upgrade to ML doesn't help your overall syncing situation. Also, I'd imagine that if the Bonjour Browser is giving you all green lights on the Bonjour connections in those areas that you might be good on that front. I'd also reboot everything since the upgrade, if you haven't already, and then run software update and everything like that before going any further. Always a good practice to power cycle after any major update as well as running software update to make sure that your system is detecting all the changes and responding accordingly: a good 'swabbing of the decks', so to speak. :)

Good luck.

Thanks. I actually upgraded to Mountain Lion a week ago after reading your earlier post. It hasn't improved the wifi syncing. At this point I'm running latest OSX with all software updates, latest iOS, latest iTunes, and even latest Airport software for my Airport Extreme. Yep, 100% Mac here. "It just works" certainly does not apply anymore.

I've upgraded each of these one by one, methodically testing wifi sync at each stage in the game and nothing has worked. It's interesting to note that when my problems started I had not even upgraded to iOS6.

BTW: I guess I wasn't explicit above, but I've definitely power-cycled and applied all available software updates. Apple needs to get in here and fix this one. 400+ posts and 97,000 views on this thread. Hard to believe this one is user-error.
