Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
How can you delete the VIP Mailbox from the mail screen on iOS 6? This VIP box is highly annoying and gets in the way of important other mailboxes. This seems like it would have to be configurable and not shoved down your throat by Apple as it really is a worthless feature.

Ugh! My apologies. I was mistaken in assuming that the solution would be ubiquitous. The technique mentioned worked on a macbook pro running 10.8.4. Since a szable portion of iPhone users don't own a mac that is clearly not an acceptable "solution".

It's not a solution for those that use Macs either.
In iOs 7.0.2 the VIP folder can be configured to be hidden or to be shown.
iOS 7 is not a solution. It is a whole new problem. ;)
Part of the issue is with iCloud and your iPhone Mail setting. On your iPhone go to Mail and mailboxes, Click on VIP and delete the name you have set for VIP List and save. The VIP mailbox should now be empty on your phone and Mac Mail, but cannot be removed.
In settings select "General"
Select "Profiles"
Select the one you want to delete.
Select "Delete"
Confirm
To follow up 2 years later, using iOS 10...
Open Mail, tap Edit at top right and uncheck VIP.
