Disappointed with maps, will google maps be available in the App Store?

I was really looking forward to the new maps but am very disappointed. Don't get me wrong the 3D maps are great, but so far in the UK I can only find London with this function.

But this isn't my gripe. It's the view in standard mode, none of the road types have different colours so navigation is much more difficult. On google maps the motorways are blue, major A roads green and so on. All the roads are the same colour on apple maps so motorways look the same as a roads etc. Is this likely to change?

If not will google maps be available in the App Store any time soon? Or is there a free/cheap map app that is as good as google maps? I can use google maps in safari but its nowhere near as intuitive :-(

I know the OS is only new, but they've been making a song and dance about this maps and I find it a big disappointing. I don't even like the colour scheme, oceans and rivers etc are shocking blue.

So in the mean time... either A) Use Google Maps in the browser window, B) Hope that Google is truly developing an iPhone App and that Apple approves such an App, or C) wait as the database slowly improves.

I am actualy considering to choose option D) get a Phone from a competitor that has Google maps on it and try it our for the next two years...shame to leave my apps behind, but after finding Berlin (Germany) positioned in the Polar Region, my trust in Apple Maps is much more damaged then the one in SIRI in German (which is pretty useless ....)

It's also worth noting the Telenav will give you a year's worth of their Scout turn-by-turn navigation service for free. It also allows downloading of maps for when you're outside of a cell service area.

I don't think it's unreasonable for Google to have to compete on a level playing field with other navigation vendors. And I'd rather see money going to independent developers than to the GooglePlex.

Ah thanks, after I read your reply I retried it and they must have fixed that one...good to see they are working on it!

But...on your call of shenanigans and horsecrap...even though I did not bother to make a screenshot...someone gladly did:

I can swear I had the google map app on my iPhone and iPad. I LOVED THAT APP! Why does Apple decide what I can have on my phone and take my app away and replace with mediocre maps?

On Google map, I could load a contact and in many instances, tap the little man on the tag and go down to street level to see the actual house and neighborhood! This came in handy when planning to go somewhere I've never been before so I can recognize the surroundings. I could even browse around the neighborhood to see if there were stores and gas stations I could go to.

the Apple maps application *****,

I am not happy!

Most of the suggestions for alternative map apps are for the US only so are of no use to overseas customers. A free app from the Australian iTunes Store that I find excellent is Whereis (http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/whereis/id452185210?mt=8). It has turn by turn functionality and in the latest update you have a choice of voices including Jennifer Hawkins (who wouldn't want to be told where to go by her?). The database is cloud based so is subject to data charges but these are waived if you are a Telstra customer & this also ensures that you always have up to date information. Of course it doesn't have public transport information which is a thing I miss most but like many others I have an icon to Google maps on Safari on my screen.

One thing that doesn't seemed to have been asked in this disscussion is that if there is a Google maps app made available through iTunes, is that it will obviously be an add-on and so the Apple Maps will remain as default. This means that any apps using mapping will use the useless Apple creation. Apple needs to give customers the choice of which map app they want as default. If you can't use the Google app as your default, you are going to lose a lot of the functionality you had with the ios5 version.

Please bring back Google Maps until such time that Apple Maps is as functional. I used to Google Maps to determine bus routes as well as walking routes around the city and those functions are not available in Apple Maps. It also appears that Apple got rid of the ManGo App which was very handy for getting directions either by walking, driving or bus. When I click on the App for info it shuts down and I see it no longer available in the App Store. Between the Map snafu and the inability to synch photos on any devices I am losing faith in Apple, a hard thing for me to admit...
