Disappointed with maps, will google maps be available in the App Store?

I was really looking forward to the new maps but am very disappointed. Don't get me wrong the 3D maps are great, but so far in the UK I can only find London with this function.

But this isn't my gripe. It's the view in standard mode, none of the road types have different colours so navigation is much more difficult. On google maps the motorways are blue, major A roads green and so on. All the roads are the same colour on apple maps so motorways look the same as a roads etc. Is this likely to change?

If not will google maps be available in the App Store any time soon? Or is there a free/cheap map app that is as good as google maps? I can use google maps in safari but its nowhere near as intuitive :-(

I know the OS is only new, but they've been making a song and dance about this maps and I find it a big disappointing. I don't even like the colour scheme, oceans and rivers etc are shocking blue.

Turn by turn doesn't work on my 4s. No voice prompting me where to turn, the screen doesn't change when I've turned right at XYZ street, and if I go the wrong way it doesn't re-route. Basically, it's a ******** map that shows me a greed dot of where I am, but not one feature of the navigation portion works.

Yet another crap app from Apple. We buy this stuff, and are always told to just "hold on"...we will fix it.

This stuff should be fucntional when released. The world is getting rather tired of being your beta testers.

This is a major FAIL for Apple.

As a Apple product owner and one who depends on Google Maps nearly everyday, I am really, really annoyed! No, mad as ****!

To make matters worse, it seems that Apple is delaying or may not approve Google Maps (rumor!) because it is too similar in function to their own POS!

Folks, this is a great example of what happens when:

a) You allow finance to rule of form and function (b/c owning maps is extremely lucritive)

b) You have poor leadership!

It seems obvious to me that the effect of Steve Jobs (RIP) no longer running Apple are starting to show now, he would have NEVER allowed this disaster to happen and heads would have rolled at Apple had this happened.

FYI... many reports have said that the plan to move away from Google started while Jobs was still CEO.

And this isn't the first time something like this has happened at Apple. Final Cut Pro X essentially abandoned all the professional editors that had used the Final Cut Pro software for years. Most of the editors I come across in New York City (I run a broadcast equipment rental company) are either still running Final Cut Pro 7, or have moved on to editors from other companies. It was a HUGE misstep on Apple's part. And on top of this... video editors haven't seen a major update on the Mac Pro computer for almost 2 years now.

That said, this Maps problem definitely a misstep on Apple's part, and it shouldn't had happen. And while we may never know why something like this slipped through, I think it is appropiate to put Scott Forstall at blame (if you must put the blame on someone). At any rate, I think it is premature and naive to say that something like this happened because Jobs is no longer CEO... because it very well could have happened with Jobs.

Perhaps so, I stated that out of emotion... not necessarily logic.

However, Steve Jobs was a perfectionist (to a fault) and even though he was part of that initiative to do Apple mapping, I can't help but believe that he would have known that is was quite obvious that it wasn't ready for prime time.

The whole issue has now reached the main stream media... Apple could have mitigated the damage by addressing this already... but no... nothing!

Unfortunitally, I get the feeling that there really is nothing they can do about it in the immediate future. It is pretty obvious that the software works, but the database behind the software is just flat out bad. And to build database of the world takes months, if not years, to do... just ask Google 😉.

The best they will be able right now is resign a contract with Google to get Google Maps back on the phone. But, I think we are all aware that will never happen. So in the mean time... either A) Use Google Maps in the browser window, B) Hope that Google is truly developing an iPhone App and that Apple approves such an App, or C) wait as the database slowly improves.

An alternative but this method is much less responsive and is not inline with the 'Apple Experience'

>B) Hope that Google is truly developing an iPhone App and that Apple approves such an App,

Have we all forgotten that Apple already has a Google Map app? Remember iOS 5 and 4? Apple developed one and then removed it! Unless there are licensing restrictions or what have you, it is there and available to put back into the Apps store. For that reason, this is why this is a MAJOR FAIL - it is Apple's refusal to deal with this embarrassment in a timely manner!

>C) wait as the database slowly improves.

I am sure you realize that this would be an unacceptable option.

That Google Map app was made possible through a contract Apple had with Google. I do not believe the details of the contract were ever made public, but rumor is that Apple was allowed by Google to use their Map database in exchange for user data that would improve... well... Google's Map database.

So in order for Google Maps to be put back on iOS 6, Apple would have to resign a contract with Google... which obviously they didn't want to do. If they did... they wouldn't have spent the money designing their own Maps app.

Therefore, really the only way to get Google Maps back on iPhone is if Google decides to create its own iPhone app, and if Apple approves such an app. If I were to bet money, that is exactly what will happen.

Then again, Google may decide not to create a Google Maps app and instead use the lack of Google Maps on the iPhone as a selling point for Android phones. Or Apple may simply not approve a Google Maps app, though I am fairly sure Apple would approve such an app... as the negative publicity by not approving a Google Maps app would rip them to pieces. Customers don't typically like seeing solutions to their problem ripped away from them at the very last step.

One thing this could/will do, is create a real opporitunity

for third party developers to make new map apps. It would

be much less political for them to leverage Google Map

technology.

The result could result in an all knew thinking of the concept

as they would not have to tow any "party line" or have an app

that is so entrenched that any change would kill its popularity.
