If you are facing a problem of not having any system sounds, notification sounds, no calls or other software sound related issues I'd suggest you read below it's a stupidly simple fix and it should solve most software issues after an immediate iOS6 update:

After updating unplug the phone from your computer and leave the phone alone for 5-10 minutes, if you still have problems: reboot, wait a few minutes and all sound related problems should be fixed.

When I updated to iOS 6 I had lost my system sounds, so I unplugged from the computer, rebooted the phone and still no go. I decided to just let the system "settle in" for a bit, let it lock and when I unlocked after 5-10 minutes sounds were back and everythings up and running again.

Patience and using something other than a docking device seems to be a key theme here. I updated my iOS while the iPhone 4S was docked on my iHome alarm radio. Instead of iPhone and my Apple TV I had Apple TV and "Dock Connector"... hence no way to play audio from iPod, YouTube, etc... like everyone else headphones worked great. What did it for me was switching to Airport mode and playing my iPhone music through that for about 30 minutes. I grabbed the phone to look at a YouTube video and went to check the audio device to play through and my choices were finally iPhone and Apple TV... unfortunately after another 30 minutes "Dock Connector" replaced my iPhone option. 😟

It certainly appears that Apple's test team missed an important variable in the upgrade scenarios.

2 weeks later... I struggled with the Dock Connector problem for a while, noticing that it would sometimes revert to iPhone and AppleTV and my iPhone speaker would work. Glimmers of hope... After leaving town for a few days I started to notice the phone get back to a state where the speaker started to work more. The behaviors I modified were much more headphone use for calls and music and I was charging the phone via wall outlet and not docking station. Things seem to be ok now. So... my lesson... if you are doing an update, make sure you go with a basic power connector or standard USB to PC or Mac. I won't be doing any more f/w updates on the Dock Station.
