IOS 6 airplay problem

- I currently have a iphone 4 and a ipad 2 both updated to ios6. When i am trying to send a video (ie. youtube, netflix ect.) to my apple tv 2 (from either device) it only plays the sounds (no video) this worked flawless before i updated to ios6. Any ideas?

On a side not airplay mirroring does work on my ipad 2 fine, just not normal airplay :/

Hi guys,

I encountered the same issues and finally cleared it with the following resolution:

- Reboot your Wi-Fi router.

- Turn on your "Airplane mode" in your iOS device and then turn it off.

That's all. This method is safe and you don't need to change and initialize your devices. This was successful on my iPod Touch (5Gen) plus Remote app + AppleTV (2Gen) + the latest iTunes on MacOS X Lion.

If possible, update your AppleTV's firmware and iTunes to the latest as well.

If the issue persists, try unregister/register the AppleID on your AppleTV/iOS device/iTunes. (I believe this may be unnecessary in most cases).

I guess that some new iOS6 packets that relates to AppleTV and AirPlay sometimes disturbs by some Wi-Fi routers. Thus rebooting the Wi-Fi router catches and passes the new packets from iOS6 devices and clears the issue.

I'm unsure why turning on/off the Airplane mode clears the issue. This looks a small discrepancy in the new iOS 6.

Note that this is just my speculation.

Cheers,

well I upgraded my Apple TV 2, had to use MacBook not over the air and I believe most of the functionality is back. and vazandrew seems right it is app specific, if an app developer, PBS radio for example, wants to add airplay functionality are they allowed to? ie is it the developer who decides or apple, can't blame the app if apple doesn't allow?

and yes I do wish I could revert my iPhone to 5.1.1 it keeps crashing I rue restored to iOS 6 as well, subject for another post

one way to get some apps (PBS radio) (puffin browser) to airplay audio, 2 examples, is to start your PBS stream, double click The home button, Swipe to the right until you get to the music controls, Select airplay, And return to the app. It doesn't work on all apps that I found it works on Several.

havnt tested airplay on the phone yet, but I expect it will work.

Thanks to the member that posted the information about updating your Apple TV That seems to have solved my problems thanks.

I couldn't view YouTube videos after upgrading to ios6 either (iPhone 4 with ios 6.1.2), but just found a very easy fix 🙂
1) Go to App Store and install the Perfect Browser App
2) Open App, click settings and scroll down to "Select Tab for TV Out" (Perfect Browser just added this functionality a week or two ago)
3) Top right hand corner of the browser you'll see an area to search YouTube...just type in whatever video you're looking for...

Once you've found the video, just click play (as normal) and voila...whatever you're watching now displays perfectly on your TV with full sound... Nice. ENJOY!! 🙂

Note - when you close down Perfect Browser it will automatically return to normal web mirroring mode, so you'll need to select TV Out again next time you want to watch videos on your TV.

I would like to say that I have found that I can no longer play a iTunes music video to my atv2 from neither of my ip5's nor an ipad2, nor ipad3. Everything is running current f/w. Airport Extreme has been fine for years, and it is hardwired to my atv2. ALL I get is the audio channel, no video. youtube, and boatloads of other Airplay apps do properly send A/V thouhg. Note: Flixster only sends audio.

Interesting, I have found that if I turn off Itunes Match on the ios device (phone) it suddenly magically works. Also, I can Airplay AND mirror everything just fine. Both of these "workarounds" are really dumb.

At this point, I am hardbooting everything in hopes that airplay will again work. It's very annoying.

Ok. My findings now (because of some bug, i cant edit my previous post):

AirPlay mirroring from MacBook Pro Retina (all updates) -> Apple TV 3G (newest soft): Now works even better. On the full-screen video frames dont seem like missing and all the content streams way quicker. Even the connection to the ATV is quicker. Significantly.

AirPlay of YouTube content from iPhone 4/4S running 6.0 does NOT work from a native Google Inc. app, however, from now on, JASMINE app does its job flawlessly.

I'm having a similar issues. I actually got AirPlay working properly after restarting my AppleTV 2 and iPad 2. I was using the ABC iView app to watch a TV show. After it started to work, approx 5 min of AirPlay time, the show I was watching restarted by itself but now only with audio and no video. I'm not blaming the new updates on either device (iPad 2 or Apple TV 2), but I've never really had any problems like this before. When trying to restart the show again, the Apple TV disappeared for the Airplay list on my iPad. Both devices still had wifi and Internet access, so not sure what's happening???

@vazandrew,

The "airplay issue" is that we can no longer airplay from YouTube to Apple TV. Apple created the issue by removing this feature/app from iOS. Sure, the Google "replacement" app is unable to do AirPlay, but that's beside the point. Apple should re-instate the native app or provide an equivalent alternative for customers who have come to depend on this feature! I re-iterate: Apple is essentially stealing from me: they sold me on Apple TV by telling me that I could "airplay" YouTube from any of my iOS devices to this $99 box. And now after I bought the device, they took away the feature! ***? I realize that I can still mirror or use a third-party app (Jasmine), but that's entirely besides the point! (besides, these workarounds don't work as well as the native YouTube app did!)

I think i found a very interesting article, which opens mind and helps to look over the

Tellerrand :) / plate edge (means look for alternatives)

Read this:

There are more handy apps like squrl, showme etc.

I tried squrl and m able to natievly airplay youtube videos with it to apple tv.

The video quality of course is much better when directly streaming from the appletv it self, through using the youtube app from apple tvs dashboard.

Whats missing now, is a compare test from an ios 5, iphone 4 etc. which airplays from youtube and squrl, to check if there is a difference in quality.

Test results from ios 5, devices are appreciated.

I can't cause i already upgraded to ios6.

Maybe i' ll give it a try with my wife's iphone 3gs.

After some poling around i noticed vevo works fine. Its youtube and netflix (even though netflix isnt a issue as i had the stock app on my atv) so your right, its a developer issue. Youtube was the main app i was concered with. As usual, i blame google lol. Thx !

I started having mirroring problems with Apple TV 3rd gen yesterday after they updated the Apple TV software. Just discovered by fooling around with settings that now you have to go into settings>AirPlay, set airplay to on AND SET ONSCREEN CODE ON, then when you use mirroring for the first time you get an onscreen code on the tv screen that then must be entered on iOS device EACH TIME! you turn on mirroring. Aargh! Why, Apple, why? So if you have iOS 6 installed, that's the deal. I would certainly like know the rationale behind this. It's extremely annoying, especially since its not listed in the "what's new" screen on the tv/apple tv. So far I've tested this on my iPad 3 and iPhone 4S and yes, I had to enter a different code each time, even if I hadn't changed from one device to another.

I just checked the Apple TV support site and found thi under "whats new" with Airplay 5.1 - note that it doesn't say the code is required, but for me that's the only way I could get mirroring to work again, and BTW, had no problem with iOS 6 mirroring until the Apple TV update yesterday:

AirPlay

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4448

AirPlay Send audio content from Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs). Also includes the ability to require an onscreen code to use AirPlay with your Apple TV.
