IOS 6 airplay problem

- I currently have a iphone 4 and a ipad 2 both updated to ios6. When i am trying to send a video (ie. youtube, netflix ect.) to my apple tv 2 (from either device) it only plays the sounds (no video) this worked flawless before i updated to ios6. Any ideas?

On a side not airplay mirroring does work on my ipad 2 fine, just not normal airplay :/

Hi guys,

I encountered the same issues and finally cleared it with the following resolution:

- Reboot your Wi-Fi router.

- Turn on your "Airplane mode" in your iOS device and then turn it off.

That's all. This method is safe and you don't need to change and initialize your devices. This was successful on my iPod Touch (5Gen) plus Remote app + AppleTV (2Gen) + the latest iTunes on MacOS X Lion.

If possible, update your AppleTV's firmware and iTunes to the latest as well.

If the issue persists, try unregister/register the AppleID on your AppleTV/iOS device/iTunes. (I believe this may be unnecessary in most cases).

I guess that some new iOS6 packets that relates to AppleTV and AirPlay sometimes disturbs by some Wi-Fi routers. Thus rebooting the Wi-Fi router catches and passes the new packets from iOS6 devices and clears the issue.

I'm unsure why turning on/off the Airplane mode clears the issue. This looks a small discrepancy in the new iOS 6.

Note that this is just my speculation.

Cheers,

iHouseFreak,

The iPhone 5 is definitely not working "flawlessly". When I try to AirPlay YouTube videos, all I get is sound. This is really ******* me off. The ONLY reason I got Apple TV was to stream YouTube videos to the TV (my wife watches a lot of Chinese videos from YouTube and we often want to watch them on the "big screen" instead of the iPad). It's like Apple sold me a car and then came into my home during the night and took back then engine!

Yes, I know, there's Jasmine that can be used as a "workaround", but that's not the point. iOS 6 takes away functionality people paid for! First the crappy Maps replacymen...and now this :-(

Well want to laugh? I found another missing option in iOS 6, it's now impossible to download 1 music from an album in your iCloud music match! you are now forced to download a full album! same if you want to delete a song of an album in your device with iOS 6, you are forced to delete the full album!

It was working very well in 5.1.1 with the possibility to take full album or just song by song, why Apple remove options to customers is beyond me...

I received my iPhone 5 today and I tested out AirPlay with ATV. Everything works perfectly fine exept Youtube. Clearly this is Google/Youtube app issue. Jasmine client works fine with AirPlay. I tested the maps navigation as well and it works very well in my city. The Maps does lack the details of Google maps but over time it will get better as Apple invests more money into it. It took google many years to get to where it is today in Maps. When it started out, just as Apple is today, it was as rudimentary as Maps is right now. Ultimately Apple will get it right. I actually like the Yelp integration in search because I get ratings and reviews immediately after a search in Maps. I have no regrets with iOS 6 now after having used it for a few days. Only Youtube AirPlay is the issue for me but I am willing to swalllow the bitter pill and use Jasmine until google updates its app. This is clearly a develpor issue not Apple issue.

It is indeed native to ATV but it is easier to type search on the iOS device and then AirPlay. It is just faster that way. But youa re right that Youtube is inbuilt in ATV and you can seemlessly use it in there. Youtube is also part of many TVs (also Roku) these days so it is pretty much everywhere. It is a minor issue for me now. I feel much better now to see that we do have access to Youtube.

@foxcub 6,

When you say "it works fine", are you sure you're talking about AirPlay (vs. mirroring?) Mirroring works fine for us too. But AirPlay definitely does not. At least not on our iPad or our iPhone 5s - all we get is sound. I just checked my phone and there's no new YouTube app, so I'm pretty sure I have the latest (v. 1.0.1.3063).

There are some updates from my 'iHouse' too:

Just got my shiny new iPhone 5 and guess what - Mirroring, AirPlay via Jasmine.app, AirPlay via FacBook.app and similar apps works just fine. Except for youtube.app. Ok, thats nothing new.

But yesterday, i had my friend for dinner, and he wanted to show me video from his iPhone 4S and via _NONE_ app, nor mirroring worked for him. I was shocked. Everytime he was trying to do somehting, even just simply turning on Mirroring (via double click Home button) some weird Error message popped on screen. Same was with trying to stream content.

I was emberassed and shocked, since my wife has same iPhone 4S and her works as good as mine iPhone 5 except for the YouTube.app, as we all know it.

If this is the case, than this is worst update ever. Who on earth would need this crappy feature to limit oneselves? I mean, if your intention of ATV is whilst hosting friends and letting them connect to your WiFi _and_ stream different content onto ATV for everyone to enterntain and watch, than what for would u use that ATV anyway?

In other words, ones have to add every single time some random Apple IDs to let people stream content in your house? Really?

Worst news ever. I dont even bother about the google's problem with AirPlay, nor with iOS6 maps anymore. This issue above is just FAIL.

Your friends Airplay did not work because probably you did not put his Apple ID and password into your ATV prior to trying Airplay. The iOS and ATV link requires Apple ID match as well.

I'm not clear as to whether you are referring to "home sharing" or "mirroring" when you say one has to enter Apple ID for AirPlay to work. That is and always has been required for "home sharing", but not for "mirroring". Prior to the Apple TV 5.1 update two days ago, all I had to do to " mirror" was set it in the task bar of my iPhone 4S and iPad 3. Now I'm having to enter a new 4-digit pass code each time i turn on mirroring, and that must match the one on the TV screen in order for mirroring to work. And as I posted earlier, it's a different code each time I turn on mirroring, so that doesn't seem to be permanently setting a pass code for each device. Is anyone else experiencing this? I can't figure out the rationale here. If Apple is trying to improve connections, security, or some such thing, then it would seem logical to assign a code to each device the first time mirroring is turned on. If, instead, Apple is trying to restrict mirroring to Apple-only devices, I have to query whether non-Apple devices have ever been able to access the mirroring function. Any ideas, anyone?

Tonight I had no problem mirroring from my iPad 3 or my iPhone 4S with no code being required. After that worked o.k. I went back into settings>AirPlay, and the code was required for any use of AirPlay as I had turned on the "code" requirement yesterday while trying to get mirroring to work. Apparently this is only required when on the Airplay settings screen?? Anyway, after turning off the code requirement, I returned to the Apple TV home screen, and mirroring continued to work just fine. The upshot is, I have no idea why mirroring wouldn't work yesterday but is o.k. today, and apparently the code requirement is irrelevant unless you are actually on the Airplay settings screen. Did not mean to get into a philosophical discussion, was simply trying to understand why things were or were not working. I do feel it is easier for one to understand what's being discussed if posters clearly state what is being discussed - Airplay overall, and/or home sharing of audio, or mirroring, etc. Otherwise the discussion gets confusing.
