Apple vs Google Maps

I am very disappointed with the new Apple Map that replaced Google Maps. This is a backward move to 2009 software. How can I get Google Maps back. I need street view when I am in a strange neighborhood. 3D is cute but how many times will anyone use it. Please help!!!!

Well I managed to downgrade (or should that be upgrade?) to IOS 5.1.1. I now have great mapping again and this means I don't have to rush out and buy a Galaxy S3 which is a result. If Google make a mapping app comparable to the version on 5.1.1 - and once users have had the chance to test and report on it, I'll consider "upgrading" to IOS 6. In the meantime, I'll be sticking with 5.1.1.

I saw pictures of huge queues in London waiting to buy the iPhone 5. I hope none of them need to use Apple Maps on their journey home :)

This new Maps application is a total disaster. The new Apple Maps are actually older than the previous Google maps, at least for my location. Plus they don't contain as much information. I was out traveling in my car and I wanted to find a McDonalds nearby. The new Appls Maps didn't locate any, not locally, not even in my country as a whole. In contrast, previous Maps app with Google maps always located nearby restaurants. So another feature I used a lot before is now unavailable to me. What a disappointment!

I tried it, and Bing, and Nokia maps. None of these are remotely as good as Google Maps App that tantrumming Apple has removed.

Jeez, grow up. This is hurting you Apple, it's repeated thousands of times a day in news channels all around the world.

Yes, it's crap with no StreetView.

I also tried Bing, and Nokia Maps, and Google Earth. None of these are remotely as good as the original Google maps app for iOS.

Jeez, Apple, grow up. Stop tantrumming. This is really hurting you. This story is repeated in thousands of new channels every day as the REASON not to get an iPhone 5. Wake up please.

The user experience is highly degraded if you do so. It's not a native app. It doesn't have street view and generally doesn't work as well.

What Apple did was reduce the user experience. It's really a shame.

Nobody outside of Apple & Google knows the actual reasons for why Google Maps is no longer on iOS. It may not be Apple who is "tantrumming". It has been reported that Apple's license to use Google's Map Data expired earlier this year, and nobody knows what Google's terms were to extend it - if they offered any. Maybe Google asked too much, or imposed restrictions. We just don't know - so don't assume the disappearance of Google Maps is down to Apple.

So Google Maps will cease to work in iOS 5 and earlier?

I don't think this is down to Google's terms. After 30 yrs of dealing with Apple (employees wonderful, management arrogant and abusive), I am sure this is down to Apple.

Steve Jobs was a genius and an ash 'ole; it's honestly why Apple succeeded, but its not easy on employees or customers...

No. From what I have read the license agreement applied to iOS 5 and earlier (an agreement that included 5 years worth of iOS releases) - so if you're still using those versions, the license is still valid. Only newer versions of iOS are affected, released after the 5 year license.

What you or I think doesn't change anything - what matters is what is actually the situation. I know as much about it as you. I'm just posting what I've read elsewhere. It could be nonsense, or it could be true. Only people privy to the private dicsussions between Apple and Google actually know what the reasons are.

On top of what others have said, it seems you can not "cache" the map in safari as well and effectively as it worked on google maps in ios 5.1.1

I travelled to the Ukraine this summer, and google map made my life so easy and saved me some cash too....as I had cached the map of the area I was gonna be on my 4S, therefre eliminating the need to stay connected and pay the exessive roaming charges. (£6/MB!)

Well, even if that was the case, informing its customers would have only made people more appreciative of Apple
