text messages missing after iOS 6 update

I updated my iPhone 3GS last night to iOS 6 and found that if I click on any old text messages it gets deleted completly. A quick google suggests similar problem was faced when user updated to iOS 5 last year.

now question is - are these messages still on phone or completly wiped out from the memory? Is there any way I can recover old messages? Unfortunatly, I didn't cared to take backup of my phone before upgrading it to iOS 6 😟

regards,

Rajesh

I just got back from the Apple store in Uptown Minneapolis and was told by Jesse that there's pretty much nothing they can do if I didn't back my iphone up. I had to just leave the store because I was about to blow a gasket. Most of my text messages are work related and what I use for notes. Bascially I can't imagine how I could get more screwed.

Update: I spoke w/tech for awhile on the phone too. IF you did have a last Cloud update (mine was in the middle of the night), you can delete and restore from that last update, the texts will come back. I'd call and have them help you through it [so you don't accidentally delete anything else.] But again, unfortunately, it's IF ONLY you updated your Cloud/or iTunes - Computer prior. My apologies to those who do not have this restore available to them.

I have the same problem on my Iphone 4. I noticed something wierd actually. The messages that I have sent or received as SMSes are intact. however the messages that I receive from Direct SMS senders like promotional smses, my bank and credit card alerts that are sent by sms gateways are the ones that show on the list but when you get inside them are blank. I have all my bank details in there and I never bothered to back up because it wasn't supposed to be wiped out in the first place. I hope there is a way to recover them or else I am gonna go for a Samsung S III anyways. Iphone 5 doesn't live up to my expectations for sure.

I had the same problem and I was very frustrated, so I (reluctantly) wiped my phone and restored it to factory settings:

Settings

General

Reset

Erase all content and settings

I then backed it up from iCloud a day before I updated it, which it prompts you to do when you re-do your phone, and I got everything back. I was relieved! Hope this helps! 🙂

google iphone 5.1.1 firmwear n then download it.

plug phone to itunes n get to the summary page

right click,RIGHT CLICK restore n find where the 5.1.1 firmwear file is n select it

after it does its thing it will ask u on ur computer to select if u want to restore from back up or new phone

for this step i looked at my phone n it had a file on it of a date before i did the update and it was not a selection on my computer.

i selected it from my phone, NOT THE COMPUTEr n then my phone ran a restore on its own, my computer just stayed in itunes.

wen my phone was almost done restoring my computer showed my old number with 5.1.1 as the firmwear n it showed all the spaced i used up as well. went threw my phone and all photos n music and texts were there...

HOPE THIS HELPS EVERYONE OUT THERE

I'm concerned this won't work for me, Benjr9239, but I really want my texts back, so I think I'm going to try it.

Questions:

1. You say you looked at you phone and it had a file on it of a date before the update...where exactly do you look for that??

2. Do I have to have a jailbroken phone for this to work?

Thanks for the advice and I truly hope this works! Apple's advice on the phone to me ended up giving me a new backup AFTER I had updated to iOS 6 and lost my texts, so the backup on my computer DEFINITELY doesn't have my texts in there. They were very apologetic at having messed that up, but it still doesn't bring me back the messages that I lost...
