text messages missing after iOS 6 update

I updated my iPhone 3GS last night to iOS 6 and found that if I click on any old text messages it gets deleted completly. A quick google suggests similar problem was faced when user updated to iOS 5 last year.

now question is - are these messages still on phone or completly wiped out from the memory? Is there any way I can recover old messages? Unfortunatly, I didn't cared to take backup of my phone before upgrading it to iOS 6 😟

regards,

Rajesh

Hey

Simply upgraded (via iCloud) all your 'lost' messages are on the phone, it just doesn't/didn't know how to show them as apple updated their software to stop spam texts containing no number, as a result all business's texts pre ios6 stopped displaying but still remained on the device.

I simply went back down my conversation log and saw texts from O2, Santander etc which has fallen off my screen back and available to be read with messages predating ios6.... All seems good though I have not delved too far yet.

Thanks for your reply Adam 🙂

We seem to have a different yet similar issue!! You're missing just your business texts (those with no number), however I'm missing every one of my 5,000+ or so text messages from the last 3 years.

Not one of them transferred over after the upgrade from iOS 3 to iOS 6 - every other single piece of transferrble data did transfer though (Contacts, Calendar, Bookmarks, Notes, Memos, Favourites, Camera Roll, Settings).

So it seems to affect different users' handsets in different ways. I lost everything but they are still showing up through a piece of software I'm using to scan the backup that is still in my iTunes Mobile Synch folder. So they're in the backup but not on my phone or at least cannot be accessed by iOS6 on my phone.

Any other thoughts on this Adam or anyone out there who is an expert or can throw in their 2 cents? 🙂

I figured all the Level 9 & Level 10'ers would be all over this issue with solutions! 🙂

You have the problem I have it seems. I never had any texts such as others mentioned that only use names to begin with. However, all of my text messages from the time prior to the 6.0 update just disappeared... All of them without exception. They did not come back with the latest update. However, still show up on the phone when I search for a key word or something that one of the messages contains. They are however not accessible.

Hi I have a similar problem; my wife updated her iPhone 4 from iOS 6.0 to 6.1 and all of her old SMS disappeared after the update. Not just business text messages, but all of them from prior to the update. She typically backs up to our iMac when her phone is plugged in, but it would be great to find those messages for her. She can't even find them when she searches for keywords in old messages (i.e. messages prior to the iOS 6.1 update).

Today my wife and I noticed that all of the text messages we had for each other are missing from our respective iPhones (iphone 5 with iOS 6.1). This has got to be a clue - because, as far as we can see, all of our other text message strings with others are still present. We are still able to text each other but only after starting a whole new instance. Strangely, when I type my wife's contact name into the iPhone search box, some of the missing texts are listed there - but when i select one it takes me to the new thread we started and it contains ONLY the new texts we started. It's as-if our two phones decided there was something wrong and severed links to the data.

I have the same issue. Updated a couple of weeks ago to 6.1.2. No problems. Everything was fine. Today, I sent texts just as I usually do. Then sent a text around 6:30 pm and it was sloooow in sending. . . didn't look like it sent so I shut my phone off, expecting to turn it back on and find the message Not Sent and then resend. no problem right? when I turned the phone back on, ALL my text messages (14 months worth) are GONE. Tried to restore from iTunes. Can't; not enough room on phone. Am I sunk? are they lost forever? afraid to sync as that means they'll be gone for good? Please help.

I managed to retain all my previous texts, and I can receive texts, but whatever texts I send are never received on the other end. This issue has already caused some major inconvenience between my wife and I. All I have to say by following the others in this thread who have attempted to get a fix from Apple, there had better be a solution very soon or I will be dumping my iPhone for a competitors product. Not only that but our entire firm has been considering going with iPhones as the company standard for the employees. If this is an issue we will have when trying to message others for business purposes, then I highly doubt we will be going to Apple products.

So please, Apple, fix this issue or it is going to turn around and bite you in the end.

I upgraded to a 5 from my 4s and used the computer backup in iTunes. All seemed to be OK until I noticed that no SMS messages from Feb 2012 had come across???? HUH????? It isn't just a "company" thing as there are many personal texts. Why would 14 months of texts not come across????? The 4s was recently backed up so that isn't the issue.
