Why is the new iOS 6 so slow?

I have same issue with my iPhone-4. It was working perfect. Scrooling was smooth on web pages, on home screen, with in apps and also with Store. But now, I start to hate my iPhone since I updated to IOS6. Other day I checked Nokia Lumina 920 Widows-8 based phone and it wonder how soomth I was! Its not only about being smooth or not but lag in opening an app or closing by home button clearly shows in efficent performance.

As trouble shooting I reset my phone to factory defualt (erased everthing) but sadly no performance improvement. Rather I wasted alot of my time reinstalling all usefull apps I had.

Apple either allow us to roll back to previous versions of IOS or fix IOS6. Make it as convenient to use as it was on IOS-5.

New OS updates use more memory, OS X 10.8 now really needs 4Gb to itself let alone the other apps so 8GB minimum. iOS 6.1 runs very smooth on my iPhone 5 but that has more ram than the 4 and 4S and a much faster CPU and GPU. The issue with using an older version of iOS is you loose the security updates that protect your phone, so you need to keep up to date, but be aware as time goes on apps will use more ram as the newer phones have more, same with the OS. The iPhone 4 is getting old now, slower processor, much slower than the A6 in the iPhone 5, and half the ram of the latest iPhone. That's how it goes, same with all phones really, they have a limited life span, always get the latest model when you update and realize two years is about the time to replace it to stay current.

I don't agree with you about replacing the hardware so frequently. Minimum time should be 3-4 years. If apple want to keep us up to date with security they can release security pacths for IOS-5 users. This is no way to push us to purchase new hardware.

IPad 3 isn't even 12 months old yet. It can run ios6. Trouble is its such a bad buggy iOS version it has ruined things. When I got my ipad3 it had the latest ios5. It was quick, smooth and had no bugs. Since ios6 not only did apple take features away they took away the user experience. App store is no good now. The new ui is slower and stumbles around. WiFi issues have appeared on mine as well as other silly little bugs like safari back buttons disappearing.

If devices aren't powerful enough then they shouldn't get the update or the update shouldn't be as bloated or buggy.

If apple wants to keep people buying their new hardware using "our os need more powerful devices" as excuses, then i think they have such terrible marketing division. They have to learn from android which used multiple os for multiple devices. And they (android) really unabling an old devices to upgrade to a newer version of their os. That is smart, and many people satisfied with their strategy. The main point is, the apple shines has begun to fade away. Why? Because the new CEO don't love the product as the former (and beloved) CEO. Just as simple as that.

Oh, just to add my comment, i just bought a new note 2, i LOVE the stylus, something i can't get from apple, the interface is great, but the app in itunes is more reliable and i have to install an internet security in my note 2. Just to let you guys know, I'm a little bit fanatic with apple, but since apple can't keep their performance, i didn't have any choice but to try another devices.

Let us know what happens. I can not even use my ipad anymore. No network. Apple is a mess. The point release on ios6 did nothing but make it worse. Wish i could change to android.

I have an ipad 1 and a fully loaded ipad 3. Guess what I am using now, my ipad1 with the old OS. Ipad3 useless after 6 months. I suggest looking at windows8.

Anyone getting battery drain since 6.1.2? I have tried a reboot and reset... Still the same. I loose 8% over it with no apps open.

Wifi doesn't connect either, even when the icon shows its connected.

Have any if you seeing slowness on ipad post-upgrade removed all email accounts, reset all settings, and rebooted to see if the performance is any better?

I've also found my ipad 2 very sensitive to which apps have access in location services, so I have actively trimmed the apps that have access there.

Also helpful, download iPhone Configuration Utility, connect iPad, and see what live logs are coming down on the iPad while in use in the Console tab.

I've found the removing of all email accounts and reset of settings to improve performance, with ongoing monitoring of locatin services as important in ensuring ongoing performance.

Absolutely yes, late8. I use my iPhone 4 as my primary phone as opposed to a land line, and I used to go all day easily, and often well into the next day. Now I unplug it from the charger in the morning to check emails, take a shower, and I'm down to 90%. By noon, the battery is completely drained. No apps running, and I even force quit email after checking it.

I also notice when I pick up the phone it is warm to the touch, and I notice it is connected to 3G. Only after a few seconds does it go back to WiFi.

If I start with a full charge, and play a game of Metalstorm or Jetpack Joyride, that takes 25-30% battery. Oddly enough, in airplane mode, I can still get through a movie on a plane, but only just. When I try to make a call or check email upon landing, it's dead within two minutes.

This was not a gradual problem like a battery with fewer and fewer charge cycles - this was an issue from the day I upgraded (I should say downgraded).

I have tried the afore mentioned resetting. I reset my phone, manually added my accounts back in, and turned off any sort of iCloud, location services, and even sycing in iTunes to make sure I did not pick up something new. No help.

I have to say, I have a Galaxy Nexus with everything turned on, and although I certainly use it less, it is ridiculously faster and more responsive, and the battery lasts for days even when I use it for occasional navigation (I have to, since my iPhone gives me under 30 mins of Wazing). As I use it more and more, I fear the iPhone's days are numbered. As soon as I figure out reliable calandar and contact syncing, you'll see my phone on freecycle or something.

Now, I would love to go get a newer iPhone, but I am weary the same thing will happen to me in under two years. I get that's only maybe $12 per day for my family's phones, but I can get a nice Android phone at this point for less, and I won't get nickel and dimed to death when it chews through my 3G/4G.

Righto Jim - I have two iPads and four iPhones to deal with, and although both types of devices have identical problems, and I've tried all posted solutions on both, I was simply more upset about my phone at the time of typing, and my post inappropriately devolved from an iOS to an iPhone post. Apologies to all for my heinous crime. Be advised, however, that everything I said applies to my iPad 2's as well. Putting them in Airplane Mode seems to help the battery life, but does not improve the speed or responsiveness.
