Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
So as usual, I updated the software on My mac and laptop... it is version 10,6.8 and now my mail applications Version: 4.6 won't open. Says it is the wrong version to work with the software... this is the FIRST time I am unhappy with my Apple products. Now to take the time to figure this out. I know enough to be technologically dumb. Help

Try booting in Safe Mode by holding Shift at Startup.
This does one pass of Disk Utility (Repair Disk), which takes five minutes or so.
Then it loads with minimal add-ons and invites you to login with your username and password (even if you normally auto-login).
try Mail in Safe mode. Any difference?

Open a Finder window and "Find" like the screenshot: By filename for Mail.app
Track down and discard any old versions of Mail you find. They don't work anyway.
Then do these two steps:
* Run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo 1.1.http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
* Run the Security update. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586

where do I then get new mail application?
It is in the 10.6.8 combo update
did the updates and didn't get new mail application

How did you do that so fast?
I requested that Combo Update download and it will still be downloading for another Hour and 40 minutes.
I requested , left and went to kitchen came back and it was done
Is mail in your Applications folder?
yes, but no longer the little blue stamp and it has a compass thing on it. Pulled it to tool bar and it still doesn't open
If you double-click on it in the Applications folder, it should open.
After it has been opened once, it will fix its Icon. After it has fixed its Icon, you should then be able to be drag its Icon onto the LEFT side of the Dock, where the other Applications are, like Safari's Icon.
Mail first needs to be moved back into the Applications folder, then run the standalone Security Update again and, maybe, before that, the Combo.
