That's an interesting development. Although I am sort of confused, if it's an firmware issue, on why a restore from backup would make iMessage stop working , since that option doesn't do anything to the the firmware. Only user data.

If that truly is the problem though snd the only solution is to completely wipe out your device and start new. I would rather just live without iMessage, since I have 2 years worth of app data on my devices that I don't want to lose. Sure you can save the app to your computer or iCloud, but that doesn't save your user data within the app, unless the app itself stores your account information online and not on your device.

If I understand correctly, my wifi at times is unstable.  If, while downloading, or installing, I lost wifi for a brief moment, something got dropped off.  Therefore when I reloaded from my backup, I reloaded with the missing files.

I'm skeptical of this also. I updated both my iphone4 and ipod gen4 directly off my imac, which in turn has a hard connection to my router, and its my ipod that has the problem with iMessage. But it only has an issue when I'm not on my home network, i.e. when i get to work it works when it wants. I've done a settings reset, and a network reset. I'm not sure what a restore would do differently, but i could try it and see how it goes.

Again, it's only my ipod that i've been experiencing problems with and only with my imessage. ( i haven't tried facetime yet) I've tried every solution posted on here and nothing so far has had a concrete fix to the issue. And it's only a problem when i'm not on my home network. I'm at a loss.

I think this is not correct info. I updated my iPad directly plugged into my MacBook Pro via App Store. No wifi. So the explanation that was given to that user is suspect.

Same problem! I rely on my ipod to text so it's very aggravating when my imessage randomly shuts off. I deeply regret updating, all it's done is give me trouble! You would think they would know about this bug before releasing it? I have an ipod 4g never had this problem before i updated. Fix ASAP. Ive tried everything. Im tired of this nonsense. I'll just have to use a different app. Thanks Apple. -_-

There are now nearly 100 posts on the site all with the same complaint. But still apple seems not to recognise the problem.

Does anyone know if action is being taken or does anyone know if it is possible to revert to OS5

    Wow it's a miracle.

iMessage is working on my iPhone 4. Now when I get home I will check the iPad to see if iMessage and Facetime both work.

    (Keeping my fingers crossed)

    Well I spoke to soon.

Still not available on the iPad.

Yup - apparently miracles seem to happen with no rhyme or reason. Starting September 21st,  I began this saga of IOS 6 upgrade and am still at it:

3 iPads - NOT A PROBLEM AT ALL

    3 iPhone 3GS - A BREEZE

1 iPhone 4S - Finally worked AFTER I had to do a restore and SET UP AS A NEW iPhone and then had to sync contacts, apps, music and photos via iTunes (which is a bummer for those who have several years of apps etc since you have to relaunch all the apps that need passwords, activations, etc. so its really not an option for those who have more than 2 pages on your phone with apps)

    5 iPhone 4 - of which

1 worked only AFTER I had to do a restore and SET UP AS NEW as above

2 finally got the iMessage working after a full restore of the unit and a restore from a backup via iTunes

and the last 2 are giving me a massive HEADACHE because:

why in heavens name do these last two iPhone 4 ONLY activate the email address for iMessage and Facetime and will not activate the actual phone number which appears on the list of the unit is anyone's guess.  I have tried everything I can think that I may have done differently.  I have been taught that when all things fail, go back to the starting point BUT GUESS WHAT - you cannot reinstall the former iOS 5.1.1 because Apple will not let you.

I loved 5.1.1 - nothing in Version 6 is worth this aggravation, frustration and down right "hostage" situation that Apple is putting me through.

So yeah, hopefully after 100 of us here and others out there are heard, some genius gnome at Apple can do a Version 6.1 that cleans out this mess.  SERIOUSLY

So, forget iMessage for now - everyone GO GET WHATSAPP - its free and works between iPhone, Blackberry, Samsung (yes, you heard me) and any other Android phone out there.  So REACH OUT AND TOUCH EVERYONE via Whatsapp

This is driving me nuts! Ever since I updated to the iOS 6 I can't send an iMessage and it keeps chucking me off my wifi..very very frustrating! I reset my settings .. iMessage worked again for all of 15 minutes!!

Apple needs to get its *** into gear..really regretting updating my ipad!

  • raulfromperu Level 1 Level 1

Try: general/Reset all settings . After that configure the wi-fi again.  I did it and iMessages started to work.

  • denamco Level 1 Level 1

Tried resetting it worked on one iPad briefly and failed completely on our other iPad and iPhone. It is not only iMessage & if ace that have problems. The wifi connection keeps dropping out. It was ultra reliable with IOS5. If this is not sorted quick we will ditch all our Apple products and go back to PC,s and windows smart phones. Apple do not seem to understand customer support.

FaceTime and iMessaging wasn't working for me a few minutes ago, and out of curiosity I decided to go next to our family router as I was trying to use it from my room, and magically it somehow started to work; so I would seriously recommend trying that.

It seems like this is a major Wi-Fi problem on Apple's part; everything about ios 6 is such a disappointment.

  • PDXREALTOR Level 1 Level 1

Here s what worked for me, on iPhone 4s.

In settings>messages get rid of all send and receive options except your phone number, which on my phone is greyed out leaving me no choice but to use it. Basically youre setting up iMessage to send and receive from your phone only.

Worked for me on ios6 on Verizon, and I had to do the same thing with ios5.01 on AT&T.

On my iPads I have my apple Id email and I can send and receive from those as well, problem is with the phone setup to send with phone number only, the iPhone and iPad don't sync.

Another thing, I only have the problem on my phone when on wi-fi, not when on the cell network.

It's a cool concept but seems a bit flawed.
