iPhone 4: no text tone with iOS 6

Since updating to iOS 6, my iphone 4 text tone doesn't go off whether the phone is locked or unlocked.

What do I do? Thanks

iPhone 4, iOS 6

Not sure if anyone will look at this since it's a few days old. But I think I got it. I've had the same issue with receiving texts since the update. I tried the following out, and it seemed to work...so far. Go to>>>

Settings>Sounds>Text Tone:

Tap on the text tone that you currently have. You should hear it right then and there, which is normal of course. Now send yourself a text and quickly hit the button on top of your phone, before you receive the text. You should hear your text sound with the incoming text.

Yes, I see where the margin of error is: me sending myself a text. But it seemed to do the trick. We'll see what happens as the day progresses.

Let me know what you all find out.

I have the same issue. I brought it to Genius Bar yesterday only to be told that I have to replace with the new phone or upgrade it to either 4S or 5. The tech didn't seem to agree with my idea that iOS 6 caused it but did say somehow the software isn't communicating with the hardware. Except iPhone 5, they can't simply replace speakers inside older phones according to him. I bought my iPhone 4 in 2010, then it died for no reason back in January 2012 and I paid $150.00 to replace it with the refurbished iPhone 4. :( He said keep using this phone should not make this issue worse so I decided not to replace or upgrade it.

Very Frustrating... I have had the same issue since updating to ios 6. Here is what I have found... Under Settings>Notifications>Messages>"View in Lock Screen" - When set to OFF I will not get new text notifications if the phone goes to sleep while in conversation or not. When set to ON Doesnt matter how phone goes to sleep I will get all notifications.

Exact same problem here as well with a 4S. If I turn on "view in lock screen" all alerts come through as expected. If not, then the behavior everyone has described continues. I have zero interest in getting pop-ups on my lock screen so Apple needs to fix this ASAP! I'm actually surprised we haven't seen more complaints as this is clearly due to iOS6.

This same issue has been bugging me ever since the update as well. It's kind of annoying that they won't admit that it's a problem with the update. No one else I know was having trouble with the update so I looked in to possible differences. I got rid of all my custom vibrations and that didn't solve it. I finally realized the problem was locking the phone while the message app is open. Then I found this thread and discovered the notifications in lock screen trick. And that so far has solved it, but I don't like messages popping up in the lock screen. It drains the battery and allows people to read your texts. They need to fix this asap.

I have done my research using a friend who went nuts texting me .... iOS 6 is the problem. Here is the down and dirty. If you are using a custom sound for your message tone, this is your problem! I tried several custom tones to aleviate this problem and none will work, when I change my custom sound back to a default sound that came with the phone, it works just fine and it vibes as well. There is a problem with the iOS's inability to deal with custom added sounds. My custom ringtones work fine for calls but if I set my custom ringtone as my text alert it won't work. All my custom sounds fail with text alert and also cancels vibration as well. Switching to a phone default sound, everything works again. Until they fix iOS 6, you will not be able to use your custom sounds.
