iPhone 4: no text tone with iOS 6

Since updating to iOS 6, my iphone 4 text tone doesn't go off whether the phone is locked or unlocked.

What do I do? Thanks

this has helped me out. but it is very annoying that i "upgraded" and yet i didn't. my wifes phone does not have this problem or a few others who have just bought a new iphone 5 or had older versions of the iphone. if you hear of any new "updates" that maybe IMPROVES the use of ALL the phones let me know would ya. thanks for your information, you've prevented me from strangling out some twerp at the phone store who was going to give me some BS story. haha

Yep add me to this party. Also, I dont recall this being the norm, when I get a new voicemail I am unable to shut up my phone. My new viocemail tone is very loud and annoying and I cannot make it stop. I have tried to use the volume buttons to no avail, the power button on top, nothing shuts it up until it's done playing. I dont recall this being the case on ios 5.

In the last week I've been on the phone with Verizon Tech support several times, Apple Tech support several times, been to the Verizon store several times, did the total reset on my iPhone 4 three times, received a replacement phone that also ended up with the same problem of not receiving text notifications in sleep mode.

Back to Verizon who contacted Apple, who instructed me to return home and do the total reset, and they would contact me in 20 minutes to see how it went. An hour later I finally called Apple to let them know, doing the total reset did not fix the problem. Apple then told me I could take the phone to the Apple store (100 miles from here) and they could look at the settings (sort of like Verizon has done on numerous occasions?).

I find it strange that when I was talking to Apple Support, they had never heard of this problem. And as far as that phone call I was supposed to receive from Apple? It's been 10 hours now, still waiting.

I'm ready to upgrade to the iPhone 5, but really don't want a $400.00 phone that won't notify me when I receive a text.

Sounds about right. They never seem to contact you when you are actually asking for help. However, throw in the towel and they will bug you every other day for a week lol. Hope you find a fix, or look elsewhere for your new phone, always an option.

ps just in case...go into Settings, Notifications, Messages, then at the bottom make sure it says Show imessage alerts from Everyone , instead of My Contacts Only. It's dumb that it defaults to My Contacts Only. Dont think this has to do with your problem though.

I called Apple yesterday and was almost at once transfered to a supervisor. My problem was not solved, but the guy was very helpful and never once tried to make it sound like it was something I'd done wrong. Since I first posted about this I learned my phone is not ringing all the time when I get a call - some times it does, others it doesn't. This was confirmed after I accidently hung up on the Apple guy and it took him three tries to call me back. Since I knew he'd call, I had the phone in my hand and there was no LED light flash, no screen light up, no ring and no vibration. He asked me tons of questions, said he'd read through this post and report the problem.

It was annoying enough to no get text notices, but not getting phone calls is worse! The missed call alert does show up, as does the visual text alert, but there are some calls that I really do need to answer. I did stress that until this past Wed. my ophone was perfect and now it wasn't. He never once suggested it was my phone and agreed it was an issue on their end.

I've gone from knowing I was getting the iPad mini (if indeed there will be one) to having serious doubts about it. I find it had to believe that this problem has been going on this long - it should have been corrected weeks ago!

I did the factory reset on my 4 three times before taking it. When I received my replacement phone, I did the factory reset twice. Still no notifications.

Yesterday I broke down and purchased the iPhone 5, 64g. For some reason I thought this would be the answer to my problems. $530 + (with accessories) I have a brand new iPhone that won't notify me that have have received a text.

Select settings:notifications:messages:view in lock screen:off (using iOS 6) and when in a conversation with the person texting you, or in your text messaging inbox when you 'lock' your iPhone (leaving the text app open) and you will not get a notification!

Exit the text app, or enter a conversation with someone else and lock your phone, and you will receive a notification when you receive a text. (From someone else.)

This affects any device using iOS6

I too have been having issues where some of the text notifications were not coming through. I have a new iPhone 5 64GB, restored from my 3GS backup from iCloud.

After reading this and other threads, it appears MY issue was related to the setting in Settings > Notifications > Messages > "View in Lock Screen." I had mine set to OFF.

After changing it to ON, I now appear to be getting ALL text notifications. It doesnt matter if I leave the text app up or not when the phone locks (I've tested both).

So far so good anyways. I hope Apple realizes this is a bug in iOS 6 and patches it in the next update.

FYI I did not bother with any reset or restores. A Factory reset might work since "View in Lock Screen" is ON by default. But if you Restore, it would restore your old setting if you had this setting OFF.

Hope this helps.

I just started having this problem last night. I wondered why I was getting no text message alerts and started checking the phone and sure enough I'd have 5 or 6 waiting for me. I have an iPhone 4s 32gb and upgraded to iOS 6 about a month ago. Needless to say I haven't tried anything yet as everybody on here seems to be getting different results from doing different things. I'm with Sprint so I don't know if that matters or not. I always keep my phone on and it is set to display on the lock screen as well. If this is an iOS 6 problem I sure hope they get it corrected fast. I expect to be a ginuea pig with Microsoft but usually Apple doesn't do this to people.
