iPhone 5 wifi issues

My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??

Wifi problems with iPhone 5

My phone was not picking up wifi for 5 days and I tried everything, such as forgetting network, resetting network settings etc, but nothing worked. I contacted 02 and they were about to send me a new phone. I backed up all data from the phone to iTunes in preperation for the new phone... I don't why, or how, but this has fixed the problem. Back to normal...strong signal and happy again! I hope this helps if anyone is having the same issue.

Dear Intuitionist,

I have to mention that I'm impressed by the level of enthusiasm you show with the iphone, it seams you have invested a lot of time investigating and trying to debbug wi-fi related problems, I have followed this post for quite a bit time and see you actively participating on it, do you or anyone close to you work at apple? to be honest even I have other apple products at office and home and I'm happy wth them, after a while got tired of dealing with this iphone problem, I did many things and spent a lot of bucks, at the end nothing work solid, I even bought one of those expensive apple routers to avoid any compatibility issues. if it was due construction material issues or other equipment making interference it would affect other brands of phones too, at home other family members have iphone and keep complaining about wifi, I gave a chance to a droid phone HTC One and it work fast and problem free with the same wifi router. In my perspective apple is failing to admit they have a design problem and attack this professionally, the people on Genius counter are just getting hit by all complains while Management Engineering is just care less, I have serious doubts that Apple monitor issues posted in this site, otherwise they would noticed there is almost 1.4 Million of people concerned by this problem, does anyone thing we are taking this in the wrong prespective?, instead of us spending time on this we should demand from apple to work on it promptly and effectively. it's not casuallity when companies start loosing market share, at the beggining they do everything for customers, later when they are stable they just ignore certain things that make customers changing preferences. think so?

I, like everyone else here, am having issues with my iPhone 5 and wifi. My phone used to work fine at home, and at the gym. I'm not exactly sure when it stopped working, but now my connection regularly drops, or often shows as connected but can't actually send or receive data.

I took multiple screen shots from speedtest showing less than 500mbps speeds, connection errors that didn't even allow tests to be completed, and other screenshots from the wifi settings area with the message that I cannot connect to the wireless network. I've fully updated my phone and ipad, and my iPad works fine, my wife's iPhone 4s works fine, computers work fine, yada yada yada.

I went in to the 'genius' bar today, and of course, on Apple's wifi in store, my phone worked totally fine. I explained that all my other devices are completely fine at home, and my phone used to work great as well, and that now my iPhone is obviously not working. I showed her my speedtest screenshots and she just told me that has nothing to do with the device and I would need to call Comcast about slow speeds. I think I may have got a bad apple at the store because I tried multiple times to explain to her that I had controlled for all those factors at home - ie disconnecting other devices so it's only my iPhone connected, connecting my iPhone and iPad side by side going to the same websites, all the while my iPad works great and iPhone won't even be able to load a basic website while on wifi. She just continued to say it was an issue with Comcast and not my iPhone, ran some diagnostics, and said my phone was fine and sent me on my way.

I also told her about this forum and how widespread the problem appears to be and she just told me that it's the internet, when you go looking for a specific problem there is always going to be a forum that makes it seem like the problem is widespread, whether it is bluetooth, wifi, battery, etc. I've never had any issues with Apple but it sure seems like the phone should just work on any network, and should run with few if any problems. Given how many views and posts are on this forum, it is surprising that the issue hasn't gone more viral and spurred apple into action, whether they send a firmware update, something included in an iOS update, etc. Super annoyed and after being a long time Apple user about ready to throw in the towel and get a different phone that works!

I've done all those steps, with the exception of updating my router firmware. Restarted my router, my modem, etc. I was implying that every other device works on my network as-is, including other apple devices running on iOS7. There is nothing strange about my network as far as I know, it's just a basic netgear router with AES+TKIP security. I have the same issue with my gym wifi, which I used to be able to connect to without issue.

If all other devices work, it would seem that would point to a device issue, but I definitely see your point if it connects at the apple store.

It seems like a device should be able to connect to pretty much any run-of-the-mill network if you have the correct password. I'm just saying that consistent with many others here, my iPhone 5 is the only device in the house that can't hold a connection on my wifi network.

I recommend updating your wi-fi router and then testing the issue.

I agree that some things should 'just work', but that's not always the case.

The iPhone 5 has the same problems, got the iphone 5 Sep 2012 on the first day it came out I went to the apple store 5 time in the first year I had my iPhone 5 for them to give me a new one each one has the same problems. Will not connect to wifi, only if I was standing on top of router. Will not connect to wifi anywhere only in Apple Store. So I call Verizon I told them I wanted my unlimited data back or I was moving on. Thank god they gave it back to me. No I really don't care that this piece of sh.t don't work on wifi I just used a lot of data. Don't know what has happened to Apple but if I could go back I would have keep my iPhone 4.

I finally ended up going to the Genius Bar - he updated the firmware, then tried to download an app. It would only download when we turned off WiFi - so ended up getting a new one. Difference is night and day. It was the phone the whole time. All of the other nonsense I went through (much of it from reading this thread) - none of it mattered. I must say it was a good experience - (the genius bar that is, not the nonsense). I just wish I had done it a long time ago.

In other words, replacing the hardware resolved the issue. That is very good to hear. I'm glad you have your wi-fi back.

This issue has been driving me nuts with my daughter's iPhone 5. All 4 iPhones, 4 iPads and 3 macbooks have no issue connecting to home wifi, but her iPhone will not even pick up the signal. Took to the Apple Store and it worked fine there!!! Turns out, she had a cheap plastic decorative case on the phone. The second I removed the cheap case, it picked up all the networks in the area!!!! No more cheap cases for her. Is it possible that your protective case may be interfering with the Wi-Fi- signal, if you have one on?

I have an Iphone 5 it used to work fine, but then out of nowhere I started having troubles with my wifi conection, and now I cant connect to any wifi, or it just connects when it's really close to it.

I bought my iphone in United States but I live in Ecuador and I take it to apple in my country and they told me that they don't manage guaranty of iphones in my country yet, so that I had to take my cellphone to the States, the problem is that I have guaranty only untill june 7th, so I did send my phone with some uncle, he toke my iphone to apple in New York and It seemed to work just fine the Iphone magicaly coneccted to their wifi signal, so they just made a hard reset of the phone and send it back to me, I wait about 4 weeks without my cellphone but today I finally got it back, and guess what .... my iphone still doesn't connect to any wifi signal... I used to be an apple fan, but today I'm so mad because of this, that if you have a chance to buy another phone somewhere else in other brand , you better do it, because apple is not what it used to be anymore...
