iPhone 5 wifi issues
My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??

My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??
iPhone 5, iOS 6
I set up my back up router, and found all kinds of discrepancies, so I went to the NetGear Knowledge Base via a link kindly provided on the router page. Here's what I found:
Wi-Fi issues with iOS 6
There have been widespread reports of wireless connection and speed problems with devices using Apple's newly-released iOS 6 connecting to NETGEAR products. The problems that you are experiencing may be due to a recent upgrade of the Apple iOS 6. While the nature and extent of the iOS 6 and Wi-Fi connectivity issues are unknown, NETGEAR will do our best to continue to monitor the updates from Apple and continue to work with our customers to ensure that we can help provide support and work-arounds (when possible) to get your devices connect properly.
In the mean time, please check out the following websites and forums discussions for additional updates and information regarding this Wi-Fi issues between your Apple iOS 6 devices and NETGEAR wireless devices:
Here's the link to the Knowledge Base articlefor anyone who wants to check it out themselves. And now I move on to the cheapo Engenius router. Will be scouting a better router soon!
Today, I helped my customer's iPhone 5 WiFi problems during on-site service by switch his router's security settings from WPA2 to WEP.
The other day, I fixed another customer's iPhone WiFi issues by assigning a static IP to his iPhone 5. Every time his iPhone 5 connects to the router, it will always have the same IP.
If you have connection problems, I suggest you check out these link for a comprehensive list of possible fixes for WiFi issues.
Dear evoluo,
I felt the same frustration you are experiencing right now. There is a solution though. I fixed my gold iphone 5s by performing a "hard reset" the same night I received it. I have gathered other iphone 5s solutios, let me include them in this email, hoping that you might try one at the time until you get wifi connectivity restored. I wooul start by "hard resetting" the iphone 5s first, and then you might try any of the other solutions as you see fit.
If your iphone 5 is not getting decent wi-fi at home I would advise you to first perform a "hard reset", i.e. hold down the on/off button (upper right hand corner) AND the Home Button (fingerprint scanner) at the same time until the phone restarts. Let it restart completely, and check for wi-fi connectivity. Second, make sure your router is isolated (about three to five feet AWAY from anything electrical (we are testing, if it works you can then place it a little closer to other devices.) If need be you can try performing another hard reset, remember your iphone 5 works somewhere else, hence it has got to be your location at home.
You can even try to isolate the devices to a room where there are NO electrical equipment and then test your iphone. Let's remember wi-fi is completely dependant on distance, wall materials, in other words if you live in a house that has any masonry exterior, or sheet metal on inside the roof, or anything of that sort, that is what would be killing the signal coming from outside the house to your router and then weakly broadcasting to your phone.
I do hope these tips will give you a somewhat workable technique to allow you to enjoy your iphone 5 the way you expect it to. In my case the same afternoon that I received my iphone 5, I activated it and started noticing very poor wi-fi connectivity (I have got a killer Motorola Surfboard AC modem/router, an Intellinet N access point they do sit close by though), and poor wi-fi nonetheless. I got online, went to apple's website, read some forums, and found that this poor wi-fi connectivity on iphone 5's is common to many users. People were doing all kind of things with ip addresses, changing routers, etc, etc. Until I found a comment explaining what worked for him. Guess what? Perform a "hard reset" and viola! It worked for me as soon as I did the "hard reset" the very first time. I do hope it works for you too.

Dear mvish86,
It could software (easily fixed with a hard reset") or it could be hardware i.e. a bad iphone 5 unit. Let me paste different solutions which worked for different iphone 5 users. I certainly hope it will help you restore you iphone 5 wi-fi capability.

Dear Adarsh Krish,
I feel deeply about frustation, however, there have been several solutions found (some work while others do not due to either a hardware issue vs a software malfunction.) I have been collecting relevant solutions since November 7th last year when I received my iphone 5 gold 8 GB and realized I had no wifi. In my case just performing a "hard reset" (i.e. hold down on/off and home buttons at the same and then wait until iphone 5 fully restarts) fixed my wifi connectivityh problems, however, it does not work every time. I am going to copy/paste the file, it contains seven pages. If you dont see all of them just write a message for intuitionist at msn dot com
Good luck!

I know, it's painful and it's making me angry. Every hotspot I've tryed works for 15 min then stops working. I'm now over in my data plan cause of this. Even at home now it says connected but won't do anything after few mins. I did hard reset just to have same thing. I have no idea about routers and stuff I just am like most and want to just connect. It's iPhone plain and simple but if u have an old one like my 3GS it has no issues. But we have 3 iPhone 5 phones and 2 don't like connecting the third one seems to work. This btw is my 4th cause I kept returning them cause of this issue. This latest one came right from china to me. I'm just so frustrated I got this to do the same thing as my old one but it's 10 times worse. Every hotspot everyday and apple stopped talking with me and won't honour there gift they gave me which now I can't get. So to all the iPhone lovers I used to be, but my contract upgrade is in less than a year and iPhone will be not one I choose next time. Cause a full year of this not working right makes me sad and angry

Dear Covelina,
Many iphone 5 users have experienced lack of wifi connectivity, intermitent, or no connection at all. When I received my iphone 5 Gold 16 GB last November, I registered it and NO wifi (even though I own a Motorola AC Gigabit wireless router.
I logged in apple.com, read some forums and realzed this was a wide spread issue. I replicated one solution which you have already done, i.e. "hard reset" the iphone 5. It worked for me, however, it does not work everytime. I have collected several solutions by different users which I will attach by pasting it into this reply. If it cuts off in the middle, just post the last line, and I will repost the remainder.
Good Luck, intuitionst

Dear Robertofromts,
Proceeed with caution, test your new iphone 5 at the apple store first of all. Have the Geniuses register your iphone 5 there at their location, provide them with your email address and your passcode. Let them connect wirelessly at their store.
Next, go outisde their building and keep on trying to connect wirelessly with your iphone 5, for instancd google apple, and see what happens. Now go home and keep on trying connecting wirelessly with you new iphone 5. They are coming out defective. There seems to be a Foxcom's workers revolt against apple, their employer, and it seems to be sabotage against apple.
I am going to attach a file of apple iphone 5 wifi misfourtunes and fixes since lat Novembe 2013 when I received my Good iphone 5s with wifi issues. I have been gathering different comments in a single file, please read it carefully and take action.
Yours truly,

I have another potential solution. It seems to be working for my iphone 5 for now. It involves fixing the symptom, not a cure though, but a much cheaper option than paying > $200 to replace the phone.
I got a wifi range extender from amazon for 30 bucks and have hooked it up in the area where we commonly use the phone. Though my older vesions of iphones and ipads work fine without the wifi range extender, iphone 5 cannot catch wifi signals without a local boost from the range extender.

My potential solution is this: I'm done. Finished. Will take it to the Apple store (still within warranty). I want a new phone, and I don't want to hear a lot of BS about router settings, etc. I'm typing this on an iPad mini that gets 30 down and 5 up, while my phone gets 2 up and 1 down, if it connects at all. And if I don't get a new phone, or the new one has the same problem, then I'm done with Apple. Right now Apple is obviously more than fine - but if they continue to fall down in this and other areas, someone will come along and unseat them. Look at what corporate bloat and arrogance did to Sony. Exiting the ecosystem will be painful, but it can be done.

Thanks very much for your information.
I own an iPhone 5 and I have WIFI problems and misfunctions.
As I own also an iPad 2, an iMac 27 and a Macbook air, all connecting perfectly to wifi, I will ask to have a new iPhone 5 replacing my one, hoping first of all in th replacement and secondarily that the new one will work better.
I'll let you know.
Yours
Robertofromts
Dear mmp1964,
I agree completely. Exchange if possible and test at the apple store, right out side the building, on your way, etc. Attempt to do it within your warranty period, most likely one year, and then be careful with Foxcom (Chinese) products, they seem to be coming out sabotaged. Please read these attached iphone 5 users' experiemces.

Dear virgoboy2004,
I understand it can get very frustating. I have collected several solutions including the last one tpday Saturday 1st, 2014.
Just start from the bottom up. Good luck, I hope this works.

Dear mvish86,
If your iphone 5 is not getting decent wi-fi at home I would advise you to first perform a "hard reset", i.e. hold down the on/off button (upper right hand corner) AND the Home Button (fingerprint scanner) at the same time until the phone restarts.

My Wife also has an iPhone 5. I can put mine and hers side-by-side, run SpeedTest and get 30 down and 5 up on hers, then get maybe 1 down and .5 up on mine. Same results with my Son's iPhone 4s, my iPad mini, etc. etc. There is a hardware defect of some of these units - end of story.

I will not get another apple product now, after months of iPhone 5 issues and them never to understand there product ***** now. Why does my old apple 3GS seem to like being stronger and even faster than iPhone 5 ? The wifi strength and connection is crap on the iPhone 5 and it's cost me more data now. If it does connect u have to be fast cause after 10 mins it will stop connecting. It's a joke and lost all my faith in this junk. There are better products now than apple the end

Wifi problems with iPhone 5
My phone was not picking up wifi for 5 days and I tried everything, such as forgetting network, resetting network settings etc, but nothing worked. I contacted 02 and they were about to send me a new phone. I backed up all data from the phone to iTunes in preperation for the new phone... I don't why, or how, but this has fixed the problem. Back to normal...strong signal and happy again! I hope this helps if anyone is having the same issue.
How to fix iphone5 wifi issue
Iphone 5 is facing many issue over WiFi usage. Similar problems are encountering in iphone 5s.
If your iphone5 or 5s is not able to find out a Wi-Fi network or loosing WiFI signal strength , please try to do following troubleshooting steps.
Finding a Wifi Network for iphone: Go to Setting -> Wi-Fi to choose available network, if you can’t find any network, you can get close to the wireless router to try again. Even this still don’t work , reset the network setting by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Connecting to a Wifi Network for iphone: Please verity that your Wifi is up and password is also correct, for the passwords c. If everything is OK , but if you are not able to connect the Wifi from your iPhone 5S or 5, to fix this Wifi problem by going to General > Rest > Reset Network Settings
There are reports where iPhone 5 users are getting slow speeds on connected to Wi-Fi.
Here are two fixes to try :
Some of above fixed are working for some user. Please tell me either of these worked for you.

I was hoping I was getting the DNS lock as described on page 40 but to no avail. For me what happens is I connect my iPhone 5 (white - 32 G) to my home network which is WPA2 AES encryption and it works just fine, downloading speeds that are close to what my Mac Book Pro gets. When my phone locks for a few minutes and I turn it back on and try to surf there is no connectivity (even though my wifi indicator shows full bars). The only way I can get it back is to turn the wifi off and back on again. This issue sounds just like the DNS lock but I tested it when the packet loss was occuring by going to google via IP and it still failed. 😟
Below picture was taken after about 30 seconds of spinning.
Just to offer a counter experience. My iPhone 5 is the black 32GB model bought on 21 Sept. I have had no real problems with the wifi as such and it is able to catch the wifi at home and work (both secured) without problem. At home I have an Airport Extreme with WAP2. Internet access is good and fast - upload and download speeds are at par with my laptop. My older iPhone 4 and iPad are also connected. I don't have details of the work wifi but the iphone 5 recognises it everytime and logs on without problem. I had a few niggling issues withtrying to get it to sync with iTunes over wifi but that seems to be better now (not fully resolved but that's a different story).
My phone firmware is 1.00.16
Some of the details of the phone from this website http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html/ are:
Hope this helps in some way.
Hi all, I just found a solution to this wifi problem, this may not apply to all though.
I've tried every single so-called solution on forums and the only one that worked for me is changing router settings. This is the screenshot
It was previously WPA with AES only, I changed them to those in the screenshot. Hope this can help some of you. Good luck 😉
I have the same issue - painfully slow wifi on my new iphone5. If i want to do anything I have to shut wifi off...
The speedtest.net below shows most of the story - the first test was done with wifi, the middle two over 2 bar ATT LTE connection and the last again with wifi. There is a major issue sending data requests out (0.01-0.02 MBPS!!???). Also, the test only shows the peak download speed. In wifi mode, the download speed would drop to zero for most of the test. Download the speedtest.net app and try yourself. FIX THIS ISSUE APPLE.
