iPhone 5 wifi issues

My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??

At this point I wouldn't load iOS 7 on your iPhone 5. I did mine yesterday and I am having extreme WiFi issues on my home closed network. Since the upgrade I have problems with YouTube, FB and just web browsing from Safari on the phone. Had 6 updates this morning and all 6 were slow or hung until I turned WiFi off and let the LTE take over. Downloads on the LTE were stupid fast compared to WiFi.

Something broke the WiFi in iOS 7.

I don't know about Youtube and Facebook, but the iOS updates being slow is probably because Apple's servers are swamped, not because of WiFi. I downloaded some updates on my Mac this morning, which has a wired ethernet connection, and it was slow coming off Apple's servers there too. As for my iPhone 5, upgrading to iOS 7 hasn't affected WiFi at all -- it worked great before, and works great now. (My previous iPhone 5 did not -- swapping the iPhone hardware was the only thing that fixed it for me.)

You just said it, swapping out the problem iPhone is the only solve this long ongoing problem. It took me three phones until I finaly got one that worked fine with wifi, most of us have known for quite a while this is a hardware problem, not a sofware problem.

iOS7 is interesting in that I find that my wifi speeds have actually improved on iPhone 5, don't know if anyone else has found that (though off-topic here).

This should be the end of this thread. If your wifi is messed up, change the phone. Changing settings, buying new routers, waiting for new firmware versions is not going to fix it. Switch the unit and get a new one and stop wasting time.

I updated 2 days ago and so far so good.

I have watched several movies on Netflix and the wifi has not dropped at all so far. 🙂

For info, the problem I was having originally was that the wifi connection would drop when i streamed movies or downloaded large apps/files. I have BT infinity and the secure wifi gave me the problems. If i connected via the BTWIFI (openzone) the connection would not drop.

This is just another example of Apple not owning up to their software and hardware problems. They always want to make it the customers problem and get $ for support. Its sickening. At least Micrsoft owns up to its problems and provides troubleshooting and diagnostic tools. I paid $800 for my iphone and i wont buy another one. My wifi has been broken for months; it didnt happen as the result of a software upgrade; i replace my antenna and its still broken. Apple needs to step up and ownt thier issues and support its ciustomers.

I am having this exact same problem and have for about a month. I had an original iPhone 5 that I bought on release day which worked fine until June 2013. At that point, the Lightning connector stopped working and it wouldn't charge or sync. I brought it into the Apple Store and they swapped it out on the spot for what I assume was a refurbished iPhone 5. The replacement worked fine until about August. I noticed it wouldn't connect to my home or gym wifi networks anymore and when it did, the service was spotty. I called into Apple on September 4 and they required I pay $19 to open a support ticket. I brought it into the Apple Store and of course it worked fine on their network. The Apple guy said that I needed to switch my home network from WPA to WEP. I tried that and I had the exact same problems. I also bought a new Airport Extreme router and am having the same issues. My AT&T cell plan is now throttled because I've gone over the 5GB monthly limit since wifi doesn't work. I just got back from the Apple store and since they gave me the refurbished phone in June, it's out of its 90 day warranty. They offered to let me buy another refurbished iPhone 5 for $280, to give me $100 for my iPhone and I could buy a 5s or just leave. An iPhone 5s would currently cost me $549. I left. This is ridiculous. The Apple Store gave me a defective phone in June and now I basically have an iPhone that won't work on wifi. This was the most frustrating experience I've ever had with Apple. Any advice???

I don't understand why you had to pay $19 for a Support Ticket if your iPhone 5 was still under the original 1 Year Apple Warranty. I had my case opened for about two months. What I was experiencing was the WiFi networks I was connected to would randomly disconnect. I would have to go into Settings and press my network to reconnect. The Apple Advisor asked me to email logs of when the issue occured and I did. After around a month of waiting for a response, they finally told me they were waiting on the Engineers to "solve it". But in the end, iOS 7 has resolved the issue. I was shocked because all along I thought it was a hardware problem. It may have had something to do with the drivers, but I can't say for sure.

PS: This issue did not occur with any other device except for my iPhone 5 that was replaced twice by Apple. I even bought a 6th Gen AirPort Extreme because I thought my 5th Gen one was causing problems. My iPhone still disconnected even with the new AirPort.

When you get a replacement product through the Apple Retail Store or through AppleCare, they should automatically link the serial number of the replacement device to your old device's warranty. Therefore, you should not have paid for the support call. BUT, I will tell you that the 1 Year warranty does come with the full year of Hardware Support, but only 90 days of Software support. Still, you called regarding WiFi issues, not a problem with iOS itself. I would say call them and see what they say. I've never had this experience where I had to pay to talk to someone about my WiFi case.

Update: I called Apple support when I got back from the Apple Store. The rep confirmed that my original iPhone's warranty was still good when I called and logged the issue, but had expired when I went into the store. He said that the store should have replaced the phone rather than trying to get me to buy another refurbished one. He set up an appointment for me to go in tomorrow and get another replacement at no charge.

We'll see if this one has the issue or not, but at least I'm getting a replacement for the one that I know doesn't work.

Thanks for the help.

I went back a few weeks ago for my second replacement at Apple. This time I was told not to do a restore as it could be something in my restore. Don't know if that makes sense...Anyways this phone seems to work better but still not as good as my 4 for livestreaming music. So not sure if it's the new phone or not using restore that helped - which BTW is a pain as I lost the data from Apps that weren't backed up on a website. I'm tired of the trips to Apple and will live with this one. But next phone won't be an iPhone. I'm done with Apple.
