Chipped iphone 5 back, paint peeling offffff!!!!

Just got my iphone 5 about 6 hours back. To my shock the paint at the side band is chipped and i can see the silver metal underneath it. Its very bad quality check apple. What should i do ? I don' t want to take it back to Apple to be told that I have to wait 2 weeks to get replacement?

The whole fun of owning a new iphone is spoiled.

Totally agree sir.

Who signed off this design decision at Apple ?

I'm been super careful with my 2 day old black iPhone 5 and have 2 'scratches' on the bezel already.

No idea how it happened as never in a pocket with metal or sharp objects; always lives on a soft surface at work/home.

Extremely dissapointed.

More so given that I've just signed a new 2 year agreement with mobile carrier Orange.

Hate to think what it will look like when I'm due for an upgrade.....

Thanks proking9

A difficult discussion I would have thought.

Although experience with the Bluewater Apple store and a broken screen on my previous 3GS was fruitful and encouraging. Who knows..

It would be interesting to see whether there is a faulty batch of iPhone 5's with anodised aluminium problems.

Maybe this is something which will reveal itself over time.

Got my black iPhone on launch day from Apple online store. I noticed that it had paint coming off around the bottom speaker holes and three chips marks, all of which were showing silver.

I phoned Apple online and they sent me a new iPhone out which I got the next day. I was told to keep it in a case as this will prolong the paint from coming off in time.

I have always put it in a case anyway but the second one after only two weeks is showing chipping around the volume buttons and lock switch.

I have made a Genius Bar appointment for next week. At this rate it looks as though I will be replacing mine every other week if this issue isn't sorted.

Very disappointed Apple, this was my first iPhone and I was so looking forward to it.

I have had many Apple products before and my two daughters and hubby have iPhone 4S and have never had any issues with the quality of theirs - in fact I would go as far to say that my girls iPhones look better than mine.

I am VERY disappointed with the quality of the new iPhones paint, it is supposed to be a premium product - and we pay premium prices for them but this time it is just not fit for purpose.

We want to admire and see our beautiful iPhones and not to have them wrapped up in cotton wool because we are too afraid they will mark and look like they have just come out of a scrap yard in six months time, that was the whole point of people wanting one - the quality and beauty of a top of the range phone!!!!

Apple you should be ashamed.

This is pretty bad. I just called Apple Care and they basically said that I "can" bring it in to have someone look at it... but I haven't even had my phone for 4 weeks and my pocket lint is apparently so abrasive that the bottom edges of the phone are now ragged and silver. What's this going to look like after 8 weeks... or a year?

The amazing thing about aluminum oxide (the annodized form of aluminum) is that it's supposed to be really durable. The "gem form" is Saffire. The only thing naturally harder is diamond. My guess.. vendor failure. This was supposed to be "hard annodized" and there was some sort of problem with the process.

My macbook is hard annodized aluminum and upon close inspection it doesn't appear to have worn through on the edges. No scratches whatsoever. In fact.. I've never seen annodized aluminum be so vulnerable to damage. I have a bunch of older iPods that were colored (apparently annodized) aluminum and, to be honest..., I haven't been particularly careful with them and they look notably better than this phone does after a fraction of the time of careful use.

My inclination is to return the phone and get a freebee from my carrier until Apple solves this. A replacement isn't even very attractive becuase I know it will just do the same thing after 4 weeks of careful use.

Apple Design and Manufacturing Guys? Please tell us this is a failure of an aluminum plating vendor and not what you had in mind for this otherwise elegant design.

I was so happy to ungrade to iPhone 5 a month ago. Now I'm ****** by the apple care representitive. The iPhone's paint start to peel off from edges just whithin 30 days of use. I spent almost 2 hours talking to apple representitive and even got tranfered to the senior representitive. He just said it's just a cosmatic problem, as long as the phone is working, Apple will not repaire or replace my phone. Ridiculous! If Apple keeps doing this and does not fix this problem, I can see no future for you Apple.

We have 2 black i phone 5 and the same thing, apple support told me they had issues and arranged a visit to a shop 30miles away, when i got there they accused me of mis using the phone and was not interested, and also dis missed the fact the support guy told they had issues, is there anything that can be done as we are very disappointed and you could say the phone are not fit for purpose or should come with a warning saying do not touch phone or paint could fall off.

cheers Dil
