Something loose in new iPhone 5
I received my iPhone 5 today and noticed that something is rattling inside when I shake the phone. Sounds like the battery.
Anyone else having that problem?

@mojomaniak, the techies in Apple store fixed it. They said the battery was not properly set. No more thuds now :)
He gave me his business card to contact him directly if I face any issues.
Hope yours got fixed too.
I think I'm going to ask them to fix the phone I have rather than replace. Not sure I want to risk other issues
@Balamuthu, I got mine replaced in a matter of minutes at my local Apple Store. Mine shipped via UPS so I did the replacement since I could only imagine the state of that battery if the package was toss around a bit. #nothudshere
Hi! I got the iPhone 5 yesterday, 32G black, it also has a slight rattle inside. I noticed it within an hour of receiving it. I took the phone to one of our local Apple Store's, a tech opened the phone and said it was the vibration motor. He returned the phone to me and said it needs to be be fixed, but since the 5 is new Apple hasn't released a fix yet. He also ran a full diagnostic test, the phone is functioning properly, but the rattle is annoying. I submitted an online case with Apple Express Lane, suggest others do the same, the more cases they get the faster it will be resolved.
That was what I chose, rather than face getting a different phone with other issues. Make sure you get a case number, so that it is documented they reglued your battery.
I am very upset with my experience at the Madison, WI apple store.
I have a rattle when I tap on the back, top portion of iPhone 5. A pinging that I can feel when I pick it up as well. I called to ask if they have any replacements in stock and was told I need to come in to find out, as she nor any geniuses could give me that info until I arrive. So, it could have been a trip for nothing. As it turns out, that was not the issue.
Bottom line, genius told me that every single iPhone 5 has the same rattle which comes from the "vibe motor". She then shows me another one that had it, only it wasn't as bad, this one felt and sounded more solid. She disagreed-she thought it was the same-it was not. She told me basically that if I didn't like the rattle noise I could buy another phone. One of those situations where you feel like they are making you out to be crazy. I'm pretty sure Apple didn't make an iPhone 5 with a loose vibe motor that rattles when you tap on it.
I am thinking I got a bad store/rep/manager and that if I go somewhere else, I may get a different answer. I want to print out a copy of this forum to show them. I have been a customer of apple since 2001, buying at least 10 different items. I have never had a problem like this, nor do I think apple made a defective product. This genius/manager were just wrong and rude.
I have something loose when skaken lightly, plus I hear some odd sound when I tap the back of the phone while it's to my head.
Mines going back as it also had a bad internal headset speaker. What a POS.
It's not the accelerametor or anything? Don't they have a gyroscope or somethign that rattles/moves? Maybe the vibrator?
Mine is making the rattle too, but not sure if they have brand new ones in stock
I went in to Apple yesterday and they replaced the phone. Very happy.
Yeah seems like the power button is slightly loose nothing major nothing to be worried about can barley notice it unless your in a quite room
My problem with the rattle is wake/sleep button, top right on the phone. If you lightly put your finger on the button a shake there is no rattle. I think the button is a cap on top of a switch soldered to the circuit board. This should be an easy fix for Apple, it is annoying and hopr it's fixed soon.
Took mine back to the Apple store. It was very busy with a line up for the new phones but they were able to fix the thunking battery problem in a few minutes. I also picked up 2 spare Lightning to USB cables, one for the car and one for work. (ouch almost 50 bucks with tax)
I decided to go the repair route instead of starting over. No break in service, no sync, password, settings issues.
The Apple store service was perfect.
Lets hope that does it, now I am a little concerned with ocassional heating and low battery life. We will see.
UPDATE: I just went to the Milwaukee Apple Store, better service, same result. The genius said it was the vibration motor and that apple couldn't replace it. He said all the other iphone 5s in the back did the same. However, I tapped on the back of one on display, and the ping wasn't as audible, which the genius confirmed. Regardless, he couldn't explain it, as he opened it up and found nothing loose inside.
I actually then took it home and discovered that when I hold the power button down while tapping, it isn't as bad! I think it's actually the loose power button I'm hearing, with the vibration motor as secondary. I don't care anymore, though I am disappointed with Apple that they couldn't make my iphone rattle less after bringing it into 2 stores. They also didn't catch that the power button was responsible.
Are you guys kidding me ? First my phone doesn't hold charge at all, now there is something rattling inside ? Steve is dead, now you have no one to do quality control ?
Is there two differen rattling noises here? I've got a rattling noise in the top of the phone, and I can here it buzzing in the earpiece when the volume is to loud on the phone. Need to get an appointment for replacement. Lots of issues with these early iPhone 5's.
