Well, I could not wait for Apple to develop a fix. With the issues in iOS mapping, I'm sure that is taking priority, along with Mountain Lion. I am working on a project with a deadline, so rolled on back to 10.7.4. Fortunately, I saved my 10.7.2 USB and went up to 10.7.4. I did use the Control+R function, but that downloads 10.7.5. I did erase my hard drive and try 10.7.5, but the same indexing problem happened. It indexed the entire drive in about 20 minutes. Then, it started indexing immediately after it completed the first indexing.
It's 10.7.4 for now!!
(I tried to add this reply to my first posting, but that never seem to work for me. I imagine it's got to be my extensions?)

So I spent all that time downgrading from Mountain Lion which freezes my Air daily just to have no spotlight index or TM backup. What a lousy few weeks it has been for this laptop.
I found that TM backup works ok with Spotlight turned off ...
Hi Kilgo,
Unfortunately you will get NO price for it, but if there was one I'm sure you are the winner of the contest running the "Longest Spotlight Indexing Time"

Actually, no, there are millions of Apple users around the world experiencing the same problem, not only with Spotlight but also the related problem with Time Machine.
I had to disable Spotlight to perform a TM backup and then re-enable it. After that, Spotlight indexing started again and last estimate was 7 weeks to completion. Tried the permissions repairs but it made no difference.
Be sure to register this issue with Apple at http://apple.com/feedbackThe more people get on to Apple about it the quicker they'll move their butts to fix it.
I am having this problem too.
LOL! Welcome to the club! Lots of people at this party. Except the guest of honor...Apple.
Now it took only about 20 minutes compared to 17 hours 2 days ago...
Thanks for the pointer... this has sorted my spotlight indexing and presumably Time Machine backup.
Hooray!
I can confirm that Time Machine now works too. All fixed! 🙂
I have a MacBook Pro 13", purchased July 2012, has worked flawlessly through all OS X upgrades in the last 18 months. This includes the upgrade to Mavericks. Last week, on February 26, 2014, there was a major upgrade to Mavericks, and the next day I had an issue with Spotlight. It keeps wanting to index my MB Pro, but the problem is that it takes FOREVER! And it doesn't even give me a time estimate. All it says is "Estimating indexing time". It's been saying that for 3 days! I have NO external drives, and I placed both my Skydrive folder & my Dropbox folder in the privacy section. I even placed the Macintosh HD in the privacy section and then removed it. I even rebooted & reinstalled Mavericks using the OS X installer. (That alone took over 24 hours.) I verified & repaired disk permissions. None of this has solved my issue. It's driving me crazy because this whole issue has slowed the processes and functions of every program I use. I'm so tired of seeing the spinning beach ball!!!!!! Somebody please help!
Very long spotlight indexing
