iPhone 5 wifi woes

Got my white 32Gb iPhone today, but am having severe problems with WiFi. I have an airport extreme, and the iPhone detects both bands, and after a few attempts accepts the password required to connect. However, I get no internet connection, and the iPhone continuously drops back to indicating "3G" before it'll fetch any data. I have reset network settings, and now done a restore- neither make any difference.

Hugely disappointed, seems like I have a faulty phone- or is anyone else having the same problem?

I have had similar problems connecting to a home WPA PSK network with an iPhone5 purchased in a London Apple store. iPhone 4S worked perfectly when connecting sid-by-side to the same websites as the iPhone5. The new phone had been restored from backup, so maybe this is where the problem originates for WPA PSK networks. I followed Leashy79's advice: go to Settings>general>reset (right down the bottom)>reset network settings. The iPhone5 is now connecting to my home WPA PSK network perfectly.

Hi Everyone, I might of made an additional discovery.

The iphone 4s Wifi Connectivity Issue.

There might be co-oncident solutions to downgrade firmware on Netgear devices "possible", i connected to a Belkin WAP and was OK.

I have just compared 2 Iphone 4s Phones at work, my PA's Iphone 4s and my own Iphone 4s. both IOS6 Upgrade, my PA's work OK, mine doesnt.

This is the difference i found below

Model , ICCI, Modem which are located in Settings, General, About

These seems to make the Iphone 4s's and other devices "unique". It seems they all dont have the same FIRMWARE etc based on the hardware components used to drive the Model, ICCI and Modem components on the phone.

I encourage everyone to make a comparison.

As downgrading formware on a Netgear shouldnt be a solution to this problem

What about other countless versions of WAP devices out there that we dont know which could have this problem ?

So, here's my update.

After trying everything related to software, I still had a 10 foot WiFi range with a high powered dual-band router where every other IOS device in the house had no problem. After two trips to the Apple Store, they finally agreed to replace the phone, stating that there is probably going to be a firmware update in a week or two. "If the new phone doesn't fix the problem, wait for the firmware update."

Guess what...

My new phone works perfectly and even has better reception than my other IOS devices.

This is with a WPA2 encryption.

In my case (short WiFi range), the issue is clearly hardware (or perhaps the new phone had a newer firmware installation already, but I didn't take note of the first phone's version to compare).

My recommendation, get a new phone if you can.

Had issues until I downgraded my routers firmware(netgear) worked fine no matter what security I used. Bought a new netgear that doesn't do wep only wpa and connects just fine. Went to bed connected woke up disconnected and couldn't explain that but for the most part I stay connected to wifi with no problems. Pre ordered mine from Sprint, it's my first iPhone and 3G is slow but no other issues with the phone.

I've got the same problem. Well, there actually seems to be a couple flavors of this problem. Mine has nothing to do with proximity. I can hold my iPhone 5 a foot away from my Apple Extreme router and it won't connect. Haven't been able to get a WiFi (over WPA) connection yet except when I did the turn cellular data off and on thing, it worked for about 5 minutes and then went dead again. LTE works beautifully, and my iPhone 4 works fine sitting right next to the iPhone 5.

I had high hopes for the "reset the network info and leave it off for 20 minutes" approach, but that changed nothing. Still not connecting.

Just got the phone today, love everything about it except this, which really *****. Sounds by all accounts like a hardware issue. Bummer.

My phone is having the same issue - can't stay connected via wifi, etc. The question I have is why does it need an internet connection to get my emails???? It's a phone & it's connected with full bars to the network. I never needed internet for any of my previous (allbeit non-iphone) phones to get emails....

Is it a setting that I need to change to make it get emails using my phone network?

You can solve your wifi issues pretty easily.

1) Go into Settings

2) Go into WiFi

3) Tap the blue arrow next to the wifi network you prefer to access

4) You will see various numbers and settings listed. Take a screen shot to capture that information for future reference if you need to reenter it later by simultaneously pressing the on/off button and the circle button. The screen shot will save to your Camera Roll.

5) Delete the numbers to the right of DSN. Enter 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4. One of those should fix both wifi connectivity and download speed.

6) If this does not work, reenter the original DSN numbers you captured with the screen shot and set up a Genius Bar appointment.

Good luck! I did this fix and have had no problems with dropped signals and blazing fast speeds. The 8.8.8.8 works best with my network.

My iPhone 5 wifi didn't work unless all three bars where showing. I found a fix that worked for me.

My home network has an Airport Express Base Station. With WPA2 secrurity settings active. Have yet to try another wifi network... i.e. non apple router network.

The following worked for me. My iPhone 5 wifi now works with less than three bars on my home wifi network. On your iPhone 5 go to>>

>>Settings> Wi-Fi > Blue icon next to the network you’re connecting to > Scroll to the bottom > Set your device’s HTTP Proxy to Auto (leave Url blank)

Hope this helps.

The thing that is weird about this is the intermittency of it. If I turn off wifi and then turn it back on and rejoin my network, I connect to the net 100% of the time, but for about 5-10 minutes, and then it just spins. If at that point I disconnect and reconnect, I'm back online for another 5-10 minutes, sometimes less.

I've tried every solution posted on these boards. Reset my network settings, changed my http proxy to auto, changed my dns, etc... Nothing changes this behavior.

Hi Everyone,

Please refer to my post below of how i resolved my connectivity issue

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4317427?start=585&tstart=0

In short: Netgear Prosafe WAP Wg102 : I had to downgrade firmware V5.03 to V5.01 and everything back to normal.

Netgear is aware of the connectivity issue with IOS6 and are in the process of writing a firmware for the device.

As a poster commented after my solution, these issues may not entirely be an APPLE fault, it could be firmware frmo your WiFi vendor which they sent to APPLE before they rolled out IOS6 which was buggy, hence having to "roll back" firmware.

Good Luck everyone
