iPhone 5 wifi woes

Got my white 32Gb iPhone today, but am having severe problems with WiFi. I have an airport extreme, and the iPhone detects both bands, and after a few attempts accepts the password required to connect. However, I get no internet connection, and the iPhone continuously drops back to indicating "3G" before it'll fetch any data. I have reset network settings, and now done a restore- neither make any difference.

Hugely disappointed, seems like I have a faulty phone- or is anyone else having the same problem?

I'm on 6.0.2 (iPhone5), and this WiFi problem is killing me.

Just now, right in front of my eyes, the connection randomly dropped.

I'm sitting here, with the router's status page (DD-WRT) refreshing every 5 seconds on my MBP (which is also connected to the same WiFi router).

I was browsing news.ycombinator.com , and the iPhone disappeared from the router's list of clients.

Then I went back to the previous page on the iPhone, and there was no connection.

How is this possible? Two devices, literally right next to each other; one works fine, the other drops connection every few minutes, and then refuses to connect for several minutes.

I've been doing the "reset network settings" dance, but it is painful to keep having to do it.

I remember we could send Steve Jobs an email; does Tim Cook accept emails too? I'd like to give him a piece of my mind.

Here's a "Sensible" New Years Resolution For You "ALL"

Dont "Buy" Apple Products that will bind you to the IOS 6 OR "upgrade" your devices to IOS 6 🙂

Otherwise, based on all these thread's that have been made and all my postings and others who have contributed alot to suggested work arounds, my empathy for you all experiencing these WiFi issues are some what limited.

You have been warned thousands of times as per these threads. Pass the message around.

To ALL Apple Users:

I'd like to let everyone know that AFTER all my WiFi Woes since IOS6, based on my tests in my company, i can confirm that the below WAP now works with Iphone 5 with IOS 6.1. About time Apple fixed this.

IOS 5 is OK, but anything after or between IOS 6.1 is a disaster.

Netgear Pro Safe WAP WG102

Firmware V5.0.3

NOTE: Firmware V5.0.3 had known connectivity issues with Iphone 4S and Iphone 5 from my tests.

A NOTE for everyone, i'd be tweaking around with your FIRMWARE again on your WAP devices, perhaps you might have good luck finally like myself.

Now for a Slap to Apple,

As per your brief on the update:

Support Article: http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/

Explain to me how all of a sudden

Netgear Pro Safe WAP WG102

Firmware V5.0.3

Is now working with the LATEST firmware on IOS 6.1.

The UPDATE is MORE than LTE support, seems like more support for WAP Devices somehow ?

Apple should publish EVERYTHING what was changed in this update

My husband and I have the same issues that everyone stated EXCEPT he now upgraded to 6.1 and STILL has issues. We bought our phones in December and they have been working totally fine until this week.

He is on 6.1 and I am still on 6.0.2 and neither of us can connect to our home wifi.

We have used the same DLink router for years and have not done anything to it - no updates, nothing was unplugged, etc.

Our MacBooks work just fine without an issue.

We both have the Black 16GB iPhone5.

Apple basically gave no advice. We've tried Setting>Reset>Reset Newtowrk Settings, tried turning on Airplane Mode then turned on wireless, tried resetting modem, tried restarting the router after this issue started, tried Other Network logins using every type of Security option, NOTHING has worked. I can't get to the router's wireless network settings to try the 8.8.8.8 thing so that doesn't help.

Seeing that my husband updated his software and I did not still tells us it might be hardware related. Any other ideas why this would have just started?

I'd suggest take some photo's of evidence that other Apple or other devices are connecting to your WiFi and just the Iphone 5's are not. The IOS 6.1 was support to unofficially fix alot of wifi issues though it wasnt published in their tech report. Having said that if you have had WiFi issues since you bought the phone, it might be possible the phone itself is FAULTY otherwise, you might need to upgrade/downgrade the firmware on your WAP i.e your router.

We have many OS X and iOS devices. They all work with my WiFi set up (Time Capsule + Airport Express to extend network) EXCEPT my 64GB iPhone 5 with iOS 6.1 - and then its only when it needs to use the Airport Express that it does not work. When connecting to the TC, then no problems. It worked with the entire network prior to the update to iOS 6.1. I have WPA and MAC filtering enabled. Any suggestions? Maybe this is an issue with the firmware in the Airport Express. Scared to update any other iOS devices until I can get my phone to work.

Thanks.

CPC: IOS 6.1 unofficially seems to have resolved WiFi issues for this been experiencing for several months. I have heard its also broken WiFi for a small number which is unfortunate if thats the case. A simple thing such as "if its no broken, then dont fix it" might be best applied.

Id suggest if possible tolook at firmware on the WAP devices if they can be upgraded/downgraded as the IOS upgrades cant be rolled back and you might be in more pain if all your devices get the same symptoms.

Thanks. I may be one of the unlucky ones as I had no issues with WiFi until I updated. I'm thinking that I my Airport Express may also be on the blink. My TimeCapsule and Airport Express both seem to have up-to-date firmware, so that does not seem to be the issue. I also have MAC filtering enabled, so will see whether that could be causing problems for some reason. If I make any progress, I'll post back.

Thanks. "Contacts" were already off in the iCloud setting, so unfortunately, that's not my problem. This weekend, I was able to test my iPhone 5 on another Apple WiFi network with a T|C and Airport Express as an extender. It did not have MAC Filtering enabled (but does have WPA2 turned on) and had the same problem - it will not reliably connect to the WiFi. I have no problem connecting to any other WiFi network, so this truly seems to be a problem between Apple devices. ("It just works" - not.) I noticed that Apple just released firmware updates to my T|C and Airport Express, which I applied, but it has not helped my problem. Will continue to experiment and post back. Any other thoughts would be welcome.

I restored my iPhone last night as I've seen on other threads that others were helped with this approach, but it didn't work for me. I am now quite convinced that the issue lies with the interaction between my first generation Airport Express and the iPhone 5. I can connect to my T|C just fine - but the Airport Express connection always hangs. The other network that I tried out also had a 1st generation Airport Express. I'd like to update other devices to see what happens, but cannot afford to lose data connection on them. At least I have unlimited data on my phone, so its not an expensive issue in that regard, just frustrating. Of course, iCloud backup also does not work at home.
