iPhone 5 not charging

Hi,

My iPhone 5 will not charge has anyone else got this problem?

When I plug the lightning cable in its as if the phone registers this but it will not charge.

I am also unable to transfer any data across to the phone.

The phone has been rebooted several times but still no luck,

Thanks

Jack

Same problem. Wall wart is ok. Cable does not charg or sync. Cable worked initially, but then went bad after a week. I borrowed another cable and the phone charges and syncs. Called apple. They wanted to charge me $19 for a new one. After complaining that is was brand new and that they should be replacing it I got handed off to a supervisor who said they would ship one. They required a CC number to make sure they got the old one back.

I wonder if the chip they are putting in the end of the cable for authentication, id or whatever has issues with static discharge. The cable physically looks pristine even under a microscope. It was not abused. It did work for a while. Putting a chip in there seems like a bad idea. I hope it has some purpose other than maintaining control of cable production.

My new replacement charging cord from Apple Store works well. No problem so far. If everyone buys a replacement cord one time over the life of the iphone5. The math is alarming. Suddenly things begin to make sense. New cable for iphone 5 - but why? Other than you can plug it in even in total darkness. Apple makes $15 profit per cord sold. Assuming Apple eventually sells 100 million iphone 5, the projected profit is 1.5 billion dollars over the next few years, just selling the cord. Apple has every incentive to make the charging cord propriatory, even the idea of implanting a chip in a charging/data cord is a genetically bad idea.

Have three of the Lightining cables, one for the office, one for the car, and one for the bedroom. The Houston Highland Village area store replaced my intermittent cable with no questions asked. Only one of them has exhibited the problem .... so far. It must be a relatively rare as there has not been that much about this problem on the tech blogs, and I can't imagine them missing the opportunity for a bit of Apple bashing.

I am UK based. I had my iPhone delivered on the launch day. It charged ok a few times then it wouldn't charge. I waggled, is that a real word?, the lead around from side to side each time I plug it in and it usually takes a three or four seconds before it starts charging. If I just plug it in and leave it, the charging fails to start.

Are all the iPhone 5s early ones that are suffering from this problem?

I too have a problem with my 32gb iPhone 5 charging. Plugged in to the computer it charges fine. If I use the mains adapter it charges for 10seconds, the charging battery icon then disappers showing the normal battery icon then the phone chirps and starts charging again for another 10seconds and carrys on doing this!

I tried my old iPhone 4 mains adapter with the new iPhone 5 cable and it works fine. I then tested the new adapter on my old phone and it too had the same problem.

So in my case it was a fault with the ac adapter not the cable. I will take it in to an apple store to be replaced when I get chance.

I have 2 lightning cables, and the new lightning to 30 pin adapter.

All seem to work in one way only (it's not reversable).

My guess is a software issue, since pins are assigned dynamically by the software, and the cables work, but only when plugged in the "right" way (though they should be reversable).

Was working for a few weeks, only noticed this starting yesterday.

I've tried restarting, both hard (holding home and power button), and a normal restart. This hasn't worked. I've also tried resetting all my settings, which also hasn't worked.

Seems to be a firmware issue, although it could be a problem with the cables, and I was unlucky on 3 different Lightning cables. That seems unlikely though. The port itself could be defective, but since it was working, and now it's not, I'm betting on software.

I am UK based and received my iPhone 5 (black 32GB) on 8 October.

It charged well inthat night using the wall adapter. From very next day it just stopped working!!

I tried different wall sockets but same result :'(

currently I am using my laptop to charge it.

Initially I thought it could be a random fault but after reading this thread I can understand its a batch fault.

Not sure whether apple is taking is seiously or waiting for a big media row on this issue?

From all the discussions along this thread regarding the charging problems of the new iPhone 5, I recommend the following sequence of remedies.

1. A hardware reset - press the home and on/off button at the same time.

2. Replace the lightning cable and/or the cube charger.

3. Replace the phone before they have the refurbished one out.

It does not seem to be a widespread problem at this time. However the lightning cord embedded chip may fail over the next few years with environmental stresses.

Tried doing a factory reset, iPhone still only charges when the lightning connector is inserted the "correct" way. Two of my iPhone lightning cables don't work, and my 30 pin adapter still isn't reversible.

Going to try getting them replaced tomorrow. It's hard to believe that 3 lightning devices would be faulty, especially since the first two worked out of the box.

My assumption is that it's something wrong with the software that assigns the pins dynamically. Still, it could be a harder problem with the phone itself.

With any luck, Apple will have an update out soon. In the mean time, I'm going to try replacing the lightning cables.

Thank you for saying that: I had my new iPhone5 plugged in for two hours not realizing it was not charging -- and I couldn't get it to start charging. So I plugged it into my USB on my computer and it started charging away.

I figured the plug-in unit was bad, until I read your post.

I checked it, made sure I was plugging the cord in the right way and viola! it charges.

I have the same problem...my first cable i couldnt get to work at all after only a few weeks of having it and so i went to the apple store last night and got a new one and it worked when i first plugged it in and i woke up this morning to an almost dead iphone! i can only get it to work by pulling it up and to the left. I'm extreamly mad about this. spent $19 on a new one and have the same problem. w t f APPLE!!!!!

My iPhone 5 charging issue has been evolving and getting worse. At first it didn't charge plugged into the wall overnight but did work when hooked up to the USB port on my Mac Air. Since then, it's begun to work with the Lightening plug inserted one way only.

This morning, the battery symbol shows that it's charging but it's not and it was also not able to be recogized by the USB port.

I read many of the above posts and, thinking that there was a chance that it was an IOS 6 issue and not a hardware issue, I restarted the phone. Now it seems to be charging in the USB port but only when the plug is inserted into the phone one way.

I'm going to see the Genius Bar in a few hours. More on this NBC station.
