    This problem reared its ugly head for me too yesterday.


    Both the iPhone and cable are only 3 months old, no signs of wear.


    I cleaned out the charging port (a bit of lint in there), tried the cable on several USB ports, rotated the orientation; nothing.


    Took the phone and cable to the Genius Bar and they replaced it without question. Got back home and... nothing.


    Still wouldn't charge (2012 iMac, both from rear USB port and keyboard USB port).


    However, upon restarting the iMac, it suddenly started charging again.

    Another disappointing accessory from Apple. I did manage to fix the problem, though, by straightening out the cable with my hands. There must have been some kinks in it from when I wrapped it around the adaptor.


    Very disappointing that the cable from my old Nokia brick never had this problem, but the advanced iPhone does. Seems like designed obsolescence to me again, Apple.

    I had the same problem as many people here... And I don't think it's the Cable that is the problem.


    Both time I figured I had an issue related to "USB Connection" I just rebooted the phone and all worked fine after.


    The second time (charging problem) I shutdown the phone and plugged in the cable while it was off and *POUF* the little apple appeared and all was good after that!!!

    I too am having issues with the IPhone 5 not charging.  I bought a new IPhone 5 for my son just 30 days ago and it simply stopped charging.  We took it back to the Verizon store where I bought it and they said it is a loose port issue that Apple is aware of.  They said to take it to the Apple Store in Tysons Corner Mall, VA for repair.  However, the Apple store claimed it must have been damaged and it would cost $229 to get a replacement.  Over my dead body!  I have two more kids with IPhone 4s that are due for upgrades.  I will switch to the Galaxy if this phone isn't repaired for free.  Apple needs to stand by its product!

    I had the issue where the charging got more difficult as the weeks went by. Got sick of wiggling the charger cable for twenty minutes trying to get a connection. Bought a new cable and still didn't work. Was due to go to apple genius next week. Today at lunch decided to pick at the docking socket with a cocktail stick. Unbelievable how much lint came out! The socket became at least 2mm deeper. Got home and both cables work perfectly.

    Thanks.  According to Verizon and Apple, the prongs inside the port were bent so it was considered damaged.  I had the port replaced for $73 at a cell phone repair store in Arlington, VA.  I still say that if the charger fit snuggly into the port, there would be no "wiggle room" and therefore no damage could be possible.  But alas, I don't have time to fight this battle.  But I won't be buying anymore IPhones either.

    I cleaned mine out with a toothpick (scraping and pulling lint out from the hole). This seems to have been quite effective. It now can be inserted in either direction and charge. There was a lot of lint that came out in the cleaning process, so I believe that was the culprit.

    I too thought I needed a new cable or charging socket on the phone - but a paper clip into the socket found a sizable lint ball.  That was it.  Gently loosened it up and shot some air in there, all is well.

    I live on a boat and charge the iPhone5 in the cockpit. I've found that the insertion end with the exposed contacts is not robust. The least bit of damage to one of the exposed, copper colored pads caused my iPhone5 not to charge. The previous design had the contacts recessed and thereby protected from minor damage.


    So, I now have a second charging cable and I'm looking for some type of protection for the tip when not plugged into the iPhone5. The connector is basically not a good design, it's too exposed and fragile.

    I agree, which is why it is a design flaw that should be covered under the warranty.  Apple claims it is damage caused by the user.  I finally had a new port installed, but I have no idea how long it will last before the same "damage" occurs again.

    Also i have same question and with an other cable ia resolve.

    But i want say why i must change the cable without sign or breaking with another expensive cable?

    How is possible disassembly the cable to see what is tehe problem: contact, ossid, break cable?

    Another cable won't resolve the problem if the connectors inside the phone's charging port are already bent or damaged, as was the case with my son's phone.  Why they got damaged in the first place, is the issue.

    My wife's iPhone 5 less then one month old is also having this charging issue.  Unable to charge or be recognized by computer.  She is extremely gentle with her phone.  No lint in the socket.   Hopefully there will be no issues with Apple or ATT in resolving this issue quickly.

    I had the same problem. iphone5 would stop charging, i tried cable up the other way and it worked a bit and thought it was the cable or cube. It turned out to be compacted dirt in the socket of the phone. I picked it out with a plastic tooth pick and bingo, all my cable now work perfectly charging and syncing.

    I finally gave up last week after the charging problem continued to worsen. I had no lint in mine, but both the headphone jack and the port were colored pink which they say indicates moisture damage. Because of that, they would not replace the phone (they could not get it to charge either). The apple store would give me a different phone (not necessarily new) for $229 and the warranty would expire at the same time I purchased the first Iphone 5 in Sept 12  and they would keep my old phone. I went to my service provider and found that I could upgrade and renew service for a brand new iphone 5 in a brand new box and a brand new warranty for $199. I also got to keep the old phone. Obviously I went with my service provider. Either way I was out $200 for an eight month old phone, but I had to have a phone that would charge.
