Scuffs/Scratches On New iPhone 5 Right Out Of The Box

Just opened my iPhone 5 which I ordered from Apple.com. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed nicks and scuffs in the bezel. I realize that at some point this might happen from normal wear and tear, but right out of the box is unaccepted. Is Apple aware of this and if so, what can be done to get this taken care of?

APPLE: THE FIX FOR THIS SCUFFGATE PROBLEM IS SUPREMELY EASY:

Just stop anodizing the aluminum on the black models. Today. That's it, that's all. Done.

You'll have a black and natural aluminum look that doesn't show minor damage. This look is already present on iPads and is much liked by consumers. There is NOTHING wrong with a black and natural aluminum combination. Natural aluminum wears, but gracefully - note that you're not hearing complaints about the white models.

Omit the anodizing process - just call a stop to it at the plants today - and start shipping natural aluminum phones with black pigmented glass that customers won't hate.

Do it now. Thank me later.

I got a white iPhone 5 on Saturday, there is a deep scratch on the bevelled edge right above the charger port. it's only small in length but if the thing costs £500 to buy I want it to arrive in perfet condition.

Looks like it's both colours that are affected, the black just comes off worse.

I'd take it back but a) there is barely any stock left and b) I dont want to be the idiot who goes into the store moaning about a tiny scracth in their phone, but to be honest if quality control at Apple was better I wouldn't have to!

If they weren't aware of this problem they surely are now.

I picked up my white iPhone 5 yesterday from the my carrier (SingTel in Singapore). The first unit I got had a visible nick in the bevel on the top left. The SingTel rep cheerfully got me another unit, and it too had a nick on the left front bevel. I'm glad I changed my unit from black to white, after reading about how easily it is to scuff the anodized colour. Poor handling in the factory (probably caused by the pressure to pump up the volume).

Apple will have to rethink the design & materials on next year's phone. Although I love the design of the iPhone 5, the choice of aluminium for the metal parts is just plain wrong. They can't use stainless steel instead because that material is much harder to machine and mill. So maybe next year's iPhone model will use LiquidMetal eh?

you'd be more of an idiot if you paid that much money for a defective product and did not return it.

Here is the scratch that came on mine, below the home button. My concern is that if I take it back and get a replacement, there is nothing to say that the build quality of other handsets will be any better and will scratch just as easily with normal use later on, even if it is perfect to start with. It's not so noticable on white, it only shows when I tilt it into the light. the HTC I just upgraded from does not have a case and there is not one mark on the body after 18 months, I could maybe live with it better if I had the phone for at least a few months and I'd made the scratch myself, but like I said, if the build quality is the same on all handsets they are going to get marked easiliy not matter how well you look after it. So, after I saw the small nick on the second unit I realised that its a QC/handling issue on the factory floor, and that I would probably have to pick through many units until I found one that was unmarked. So I settled for the second unit, and immediately bought a case for it (couleur by Uniq--the slimmest folio-style case I could find).

Apple tries too hard... they just don't have the means at succeeding! They are horrible at QC.. time and time again, they screw up every launch. They need to get rid of that black shinny paint at once and move to a dull colour! What was Tim Cook and Johnny Ive thinking? Especially Ives? His creditibility goes WAY Down... DOWN!

What a mess from a design point Johnny! Apple sort your S**t together and get this under control. It's making headlines on social media and blogs and now the news! I see lawsuits happening shortly!

Same situaton as Mr. Pendegraff here, I got my iphone 5 on contract and bought a 64Gb unit on top of that for

899$ plus canadian taxes - paying close to 1035$ Canadian Dollars which represent today 1055$ U.S. Dollars.

Both phones came with some physical flaws. My wife's has a scuff on the top right over the camera and mine

has a serious scratch in the back about 1mm in diameter showing the silver coloring under the black as it shines reflecting light.

Both the phones were covered with the original apple plastic film and both devices were out of the box.

I am very disappointed since I have been a loyal customer of Apple always paying more for their product Vs. the competition but this time they have gone too far. Over 1000$ for a phone that comes scratched out of the box, i can only imagine what it would look like after a few weeks. I"ve been loyal to apple starting with the early ipod and have had every single iphone since the first generation iphone, owned a G4 and we currently own two Ipads 2nd generation and two Macbook Pros. Point of all this is, Apple might have lost me, if not for the appeal my wife and I feel towards their products, Apple has lost all appeal to me. Simply put, this is ridiculous!

Just got 2 White 64gb and one of them is 100% perfect and one of them has literally 4 dents all over the chamfered metal band and attena region.

I now am being told to go back to VZW store to replace and I know for a fact they will not even have any inventory for the phones.

This is a big inconvenience and I am dissapointed with the QC on these new phones.

Good thing I left all the plastic film on the phones or the store would question whether I put the dents on it.
