Scuffs/Scratches On New iPhone 5 Right Out Of The Box

Just opened my iPhone 5 which I ordered from Apple.com. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed nicks and scuffs in the bezel. I realize that at some point this might happen from normal wear and tear, but right out of the box is unaccepted. Is Apple aware of this and if so, what can be done to get this taken care of?

Immediately noticed nicks/ scratches showing the silver on my iphone 5 32gb that I received yesterday. I preordered it from Orange UK. Called orange later they said that I can send the phone back to them and wait for a replacement sent out ( possibly a month or 2 without a phone- not good enough, and who's to say the unopened replacement will be the same or even worse) After another call to them they advised going direct to apple as its a manufacturing/design defect.

Spoke to a friend who works at the apple store in Bluewater UK apparently they are dealing with this problem with repairs/ possibly replacements?

I've not got an appointment for Thursday afternoon at the Genius Bar but I'm not getting my hopes up on a replacement. This is not good enough, if they do not replace I will walk away from it and apple ( I've always paid good money for iPhones/iPads and etc but after seeing this issue I'm totally disappointed in them.)

Wonder if they can replace the bezel in store ( hence repair which I was told would only be 10-20 mins)

We paid good money for these products and they should be near immaculate on day 1!

Well I am not making it up either, week 35 iPhone 5 64Gb with a small dent around the glass and bezel area and anodizing missing on bottom right corner. This was like this out of the box, and at this time I feel maybe just getting a refund and sitting this out for a few months would be a good idea, I have to say the spiel about fit and finish from Apple does not stand up with my unit at least.

There was a video posted several days prior to the release, I'm sure you have seen it by now it's all over Youtube. Anyway in the video we are warned that the early production run has defects and only 10/100 phones are up to par qualitywise. The video shows the phones which turned out to be the actual ones released, and the problems turned out to be authentic ones.

I have two nicks on my phone. Black 32gb. This was discovered within 30 minutes after I received the phone the first day it was delivered on the 21st from UPS and in a heartbeat - I called tech support. I seriously thought this phone was dropped or something right before packaging. I submitted a photo of my phone to their senior technical supervisor and they have sent me a replacement unit to be delivered by monday (tomorrow) via fedex overnight shipping. I thought it was just the black models with this problem but wow white models too?

I have seen this as well. I sent a link to Apple and also to the Mac rumours poll that seem to show that out of over 500 phones just over 400 had scuffs from the box, I will talk to Apple tomorrow and see what the next step is, but it does seem a total refund and buying again maybe a better option as many have ended up with scuffs on new handsets issued as replacements. 😟

I am sure Apple are aware of the issue, its in the media now. The thing is the Aluminium used in the iPhone 5 is pretty soft it seems and also anodising on sharp chamfered edges is never a smart move for longevity, it will just wear away, some users have reported cases scuffing the phones too. The 4S had a stainless steel aerial band and was much more robust to scuffing, also it was silver coloured and not so obvious even though white iphones with silver aerial bands are seeing nicks and scuffs too. I personally don't see this issue getting fixed until the replacement to the iPhone 5, rather like the 4 death grip issue and the 4S being great on the signal issue.
