Scuffs/Scratches On New iPhone 5 Right Out Of The Box

Just opened my iPhone 5 which I ordered from Apple.com. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed nicks and scuffs in the bezel. I realize that at some point this might happen from normal wear and tear, but right out of the box is unaccepted. Is Apple aware of this and if so, what can be done to get this taken care of?

Scuffs right out the box here too. The genius opened 3 boxes in front of me and they all had problems, the 3rd one had also a scratch on the screen. The genius was speechless in front of such poor quality check from the factory. One manager came, I was asked to take one of them as they were not going to open any more boxes.

We are very far from what Jony Yve said in the video ¨Quality you'd expect from a finely crafted watch¨. I guess not.

What is wrong at Apple?

These look identical to the nicks on my phone. Different locations though. Interesting that there doesn' appear to be any clear pattern the pictures. Some look outrageous and hard to believe that they would get through qualify control inspections. These little ones are believable in my opinion, also in my actual experience.

I think the hard reality though is that there might be little apple can do. Yes, they should provide replacements for a perfect product. I'm 100% behind that.

This said, I think it's a trade off with the specs Apple decided on with their anodizing process. Because the phone is so thin, I suspec this might create challenges with increasing anodizing specs, so Apple made a decision here, possibly not a good one. History will tell.

In looking at some of these pictures, the reality for me is while I love the black slate, my phone will highly someday look like these pictures, even with attention I always treat my phones.

So we know Apple will exchange and make any ligitimate replacement right. The question is whether is worth getting the color you want, knowing how susceptible it will be to everyday use, even with the best care.

Sure you can put it in a case, but that doesn't make sense if the very reason you're buying it for is the beautiful design and bezel. Jury's still out of my decision. I'm holding on to my black slate and will make a decision before the 30-day return policy runs out.

Don't hesitate to take your phone back if it is not perfect. I received mine on Friday afternoon and as soon as I took it out of the box, I noticed scratches all over the screen. I called Applecare right away and they set up an appointment for me at my local Apple Store for the next day. My phone was replaced, no questions asked.

In my opinion, Apple has rushed this product and the quality control has slipped a little bit. I have noticed that the bezel around the phone has a ding or two around it, but I am not going to worry about it for now. I purchased Applecare + and I am thankful for that.

If the paint/finish wears off, I will just have Apple replace it.

Well what I am going to do now that I have discovered this shocking truth about the new iPhone 5 is that: when mine arrives, when it does (ugh), I am going to immediately take it box-unopened to my nearest AT&T store, whom I bought it through, and Open it right in front of a store representative and/or manager. That way if there are any flaws to my coveted piece, they will see whats up.

Although I would be too impatient to wait, I'd probably open it when I get it anyway, and complaint to myself and call customer service and be mad. Because Nothing satisfies me. Ins't that right Apple owners? We cannot be satisfied by anything. And I ain't making fun, I'm speaking truth. Because that is why we have iPhones. Because anything less is down right unclassy. Truth.

Yes I'm sorry I may have a tad bit. But taking a step back, if it's luxury items we strive to attain, then it's perfection we must obtain. And yes I do not expect any of my Apple items to have even the slightest ding, bump, or scratch. I don't care how fast those workers in China put together my item. If it's scratched, it's flawed. That is not Apple.

I kept the first one. It was the best of those presented. I will wait to see if Apple reacts to the ScuffGate and if they do, what will be their solution.

Just to let you know, when I was sent to the genius bar to get a replacement, I was not offered a retail box, the replacement iPhones were coming from small white boxes and all of them had "the problem".

The Genius was scared for his own iPhone to be like one of those.

Yes, I've experienced this exchange process with the 4s. They say they are all new phones, just not for retail. I'd much rather prefer a complete swap though. But I guess it makes the exchange more difficult because they have the accessories in them. I believe these are phones only if they were anything like the 4s.

Too bad that the replacement phones have the problem also. I suspect it will take time to get better build phones out (assuming Apple does make a change to their production line).

My black 64gb looks similar to these. But I think that even if my phone was perfect, it would soon start to look like this.

Apple didn't think this through for real world use. It's a beautiful phone, but not practical if it results in scuffs with minimum use. I've read others saying they're getting scatches from cases being put on/off. Seeing how think the anodize is on the black, I don't find this hard to believe.
