iPhone 5 flash photos are very dark

Hi. Just got my new iPhone 5 with 64 GB and I noticed that whenever I take a falsh phot, the photo is very dark to almost black. The LED flash is working. Has anyone noticed this today? Could it be software or hardware problem? Pictures without the flash seems OK.

I'm told that doing a hard reset fixes this, temporarily at least. No reason to do full restores. Others have said fully closing out and restarting the camera app works as well. Make sure it's cleared out of the background apps tray, not just hidden.

Just a few ideas that may save you all some time.

I'm on my second 64gb sim free iphone 5, I sent the first one back as I was having this problem. I am STILL having the same issue with my second handset. I called tech support today and the man said he'd not heard of this issue before so he guessed Apple hadn't noted it as being a 'common' or 'standard well known' issue(like the purple haze photo problems apple had made a statement on a few weeks ago) Anyways he told me to do a full reset whilst connected to iTunes on your laptop/pc/mac with your USB cable as this would delete the current iOS 6 and install it again. He said if this didn't work, I should exchange it for another one AGAIN as he didnt 'think' this issue was down to a software problem and that it sounded as though it was a faulty handset. So I did the rest and it seamt to of worked initially.....however, suprise, suprise, my phone has reverted back to the same old dark pictures.

So guess who's exchanging her iphone 5 for the 3rd time this weekend! Not happy. I just want to know if it is a software issue as surely I can't get unlucky 3 times in row with faulty handsets?! If it is a software issue, Apple pleaseeeeeeee bring out a fix for this as I can't keep changing handsets.

Ginag84, thanks for the info.

1) It is highly annoying that Apple says they never heard of this issue when this issue has been posted many times on their "Apple support" site such as this one, of which has the purpose of reporting issues to Apple.

2) If its a hardware issue, Apple should still be able to provide a software fix because we know that full reset fixes the issue at least temporarily. In other words, instead of requiring the user to do a full reset, Apple should be able to provide a simple software fix that "periodically resets" only the flash portion, and do this quietly in the background so the user does not even notice.

3) I love the iPhone but have never been impressed with apple support. For the first time in 4 years, I am starting to seriously consider alternatives to the iPhone based on this issue which Apple still seems to have "never heard of" and is providing no planned fix for.

Hello, just a quick update, I swapped my handset for a 3rd time as i stated in my previous post and was still having the same issues, so I swapped it again for the 4th time and yet again Im still having issues. I'm currently contemplating swapping it again for my 5th handset or just taking the risk and keeping it and hoping its an issue that an update can fix. I wish Apple would let us know.

And in response to your comment on you considering other alternatives.....all I will say is, I sold my quad core Galaxy s3 for this phone and I'm starting to regret it!!!

Hi there, do you no its definitely a software issue?

People seem to be in the dark still....including Apple!! I rang Apple and spoke to there tech team and he man said he'd never heard of the issue and that I should take the phone back if a hard reset didn't work! 4 handsets later I'm still having this issue! So you telling me its software based is a massive relief...at least I can keep my handset!

Doing a reboot got rid of mine, same exact issue, and it was happening constantly. So yeah, it's a software issue. Might be helpful to wait and see, instead of constantly cycling through phones. Do you really think that 4 handsets all have the same exact hardware problem? The odds are pretty low that would happen.

It's software/firmware.

Ha, trust me, I get 'the' worst luck, so having 4 dodgy handsets really could happen to me!! Especially as each time I've taken the phone back to a different store in various cities(just to make sure it wasn't one dodgy batch at the same store) I was starting to think it can't be hardware, it has to be software....but then when I called Apple and he said he'd not heard of it and I should take it back(again) So I started to think I must keep getting faulty handsets again!! After all, who better to advise you than Apple right? Well obviously not in this case!

Also a reset/reboot only fixes my issue temporarily, the issue always comes back, is yours the same or has it permanently fixed it?

Anyway I will keep hold of my handset now, so thanks for your advice and info :)

I had the same issue in my 16 G apple unlocked phone.

Got rid of the problem when I removed the rear scratch guard that comes with the phone.

Hi ginag84,

Not sure but this might be the problem with all your 4 handsets.

Please try this and let us know if your problem is fixed. Just curious to know

What went wrong with all 4 handsets in your case.
