iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

Well, after my DFU restore (including backup restore) and turning off WiFi sync (never used it anyway), looks like my battery is draiining normally, at least while on standby.

Usage: 1 hour 34 minutes

Standby: 20 hours 49 minuts

Level: 77%

My math with those numbers places me at around 76% so all is good so far. I'll know more tomorrow when I'm actually out and putting more usage time into it.

Hi Dan, it would be great if you could let us know if your new phone is any different.

I'm guessing it can't be every iPhone 5, there would be far more posts in here for instance? Maybe I'm wrong but it would seem there's a whole lot of folk without issue? Or have Apple got a major problem their hands?

A replacement phone for all sales to date? Wow..

I still don't think it is a hardware issue. As someone posted earlier it may be some little detail in the factory flash that causes the problem. It would be nice to know if only a DFU restore will fix it or a reset of all parameters like the iPhone 4S required. See http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/12/02/how-to-fix-bad-iphone-4s-battery-life-in -5-minutes/

But what really ***** is that Apple knows all about this but doesn't want a PR scandal like it has endured in the past and like it has right now with Maps. So they are letting all their customers fumble around in the dark and making it hard on the customer service department at all the Telcos in the world who sell iPhones.

After three cycles of letting the battery drain completely and recharge to 100%, as well as being forced into a DFU restore last night by Apple Support (only to end up having them make me a Genius Bar appt, but whatever), my issues seem to be solved (?).

Unplugged last night, held at 100% for at least 1 hour 20 min of standby with 39 min of usage (general fiddling, messing with settings, texts). After at few more hours of reading, few texts and a couple games, went to bed; woke to 3 hours 4 min usage, 10 hours 52 min standby with 86% remaining. Seems pretty ok.

Try the DFU restore! I did not go throught the nightmare of setting up as new iPhone as others suggested, I just then restored from an iTunes backup.

I may eat my words--we'll see what a day of actual usage holds.

...just to add, I have not yet plugged my phone into iTunes, I backed up all my pictures and music from my iPhone 4 on my MBP and that's where there remain. I reinstalled all my apps direct on the phone.

I'm not suffering major battery issues but as I've said earlier, I'm very disappointed in the artery performance no way near as good as my two ear old iPhone 4.. Is this the key to the issues?

I am curious if this works for people (its been a partial fix for me, after losing 1 percent ever 3-5 minutes in standby). Turn off ALL pushing for MAIL. Make these options manual. At having it push every 1 hour I had the problem above, I switched everything to manual and now it seems to be fixed, although there are occasions where it goes back to being faulty.

Hi clansaw.

See this link (posted by St4lker several pages ago).

A small note, the Apple Support guy had me hold the two buttons until the apple appeared (then let go of sleep), rather than the "exactly ten seconds" as stated in the article. Good luck!

I still don't think my battery is quite as it should be, but I have seen a VAST improvement.

Was having the same battery problems until I performed the following:

  1. backed up my data on ios6 so that i could restore it
  2. performed a DFU reset.
  3. set up the phone as a new phone instead of restoring.
  4. after going through the prompts, i manually restored from the most recent backup (step 1) via iTunes
  5. went into settings / general / reset reset all settings
  6. i then performed a full battery charge and the battery life is MUCH better now.

For example, now I'm:

8:50 AM 97%

10:36 AM 94%

12:33 AM 90%

I've only lost around 7% in 4 hours with no applications running on LTE. Before I was losing 2-5% every 15-20 mins with no applications running on LTE!!!! 😠

BTW: I also turned off the settings for Stock and Weather on the Notifications Screen.

If you follow these steps, you'll probably receive the same results.
